One Room Challenge Week Three

Welcome to Week Three of the One Room Challenge, created by Linda of Calling it Home. I am thrilled to be one of the 20 participants, listed above! We are each redoing one room in six weeks and posting updates every Wednesday. Click here if you missed Week One, and here for Week Two.

I have selected my home office to transform, using Lilly Pulitzer's personal desk as my inspiration. This week, I focused on my bookcase. I have been dreading this project, as bookcase styling is one of my greatest design challenges. Part of my problem is that I have too many books! And, I am limited on storage space, so I need my bookcase to be functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Let's take a look at some of my inspirational images...

Minnie Mortimer's bookcase

Now that I have distracted you with pretty pictures, let's take a quick look at what my bookcase looked like at the beginning of this challenge...

Yikes! What I did here was literally take my books and clutter out of their boxes and stuff them on the shelves. Not pretty, but moving isn't pretty, and I was desperate to get rid of the boxes!

Here is what my bookcase looks like today... I am pleased that I was able to put this together using only items I already possessed, via a week-long scavenger hunt around our home. However, I'm still not 100 percent pleased with the results, so please consider this as still a work in progress...

Any words of advice on bookcase styling? Now don't forget to head over to see what the other ORC participants are up to... And stay tuned for updates from the Linking Participants tomorrow!

  2. I think you did pretty well. I actually have BOOKS in my bookcase as well :) and it is challenging. After seeing a pic on Pinterest i put them in color groups, tallest to shortest and pulled them all forward to the widest book so the spines were even. I look at these books with my morning coffee everyday so I critiqued it daily ;-) this is the happiest I have ever been with it. Pamela

  5. I think you already did a great job Andrea! the best part is, it's easy to tweak it later on once all the other elements are in! Can't wait to see more!

  7. Hi Andrea!
The collection of blue and white across the top is perfection between the luscious draperies.
I think there may be just a bit too many objects on top and among the books. In your case I think I would stick with mostly books arranged both horizontally and vertically in a pleasing pattern and then add only a couple of stand out accessories. Since it is a stand alone piece rather than a built in bookcase, I would keep it clean and architectural. The reflection of the rug in the mirror at the bottom keeps things pretty busy but very cool!
I really love the collected look, color and height that the blue and white collection lends to the room!!!
    You are doing great!!!
    XO

  8. One more thing... if there are lights in the top that light up the first shelf, I would put something special like a small painting and that's it, to break things up between the blue and white collection and the books.

  9. obsessed with the pottery on top for sho. but you probably already knew that :)

your inspiration is stellar. i say just start giving the shelves a little bit of breathing room and rearrange a little bit each day. at least, that's what i do.

  19. Heck....just adding the vases on top did it for me! It looks casually undecorated which is what we all strive for right:)

  20. That bookcase is out of control! You had me at mirrors and peach taffeta.

  21. I don't know where you scored that bookcase, but it's perfection. I'd say just pare it down a bit and you'll be good as gold!

  22. I have a hard time focusing on the bookcase with the dreamy allure of those gorgeous drapes but I am a big fan of the cluster of blue and white on top. I do shelves by instinct rather than formula and my instinct says give 'em a little more breathing room - moments for the eyes to rest - but I defer to the master, Mrs. Sherry Hart. What she says goes in my book. She can style a bookcase like none other. Simply cannot wait to see this room in all its gorgeous glory!

  23. I think what you've done looks so good. I couldn't style my way out of a paper bag. Not my strong suit. Your room is going to be so gorgeous!

  24. I hear you about the struggle to style bookcases when you all ready have so many books...I even wrote a whole blog post about that! Now that my bookcases look good, I banned us from buying anymore books unless the book is really special...it has to be bookcase worthy!
Love the progress in your room, and I think your bookcases look pretty good right now!!

  25. Looking good my dear! Loving all the porcelain up top. I think you did a stellar job styling. The only thing I'd do differently is the bottom shelf. I'd probably group the books by size and color.

  28. Huge difference! Love the blue & white collection on top. And lots of fun little pieces on the bookcase.
I have a hard time styling bookcases because it seems the best way to style them is with minimal books, but then a bookcase is supposed to be for books... soooo... (sigh)... where are you supposed to put the books?! Difficult!
    Keep up the great work!

  32. looking good + bookcases are hard to style(don't want it to look decoratery)so this is what I would do..take some of the blue & white off the top(just a few pieces) + give some breathing space on the bottom shelf. have a wonderful Easter. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com

  35. Loving that collection of blue and white on top!! That looks great! Bookcases are always a hard one for me, styled vs unstyled. I think you did a great job!

  36. Yes you do have a great amount of books.....I'd like that problem, mine was the opposite. A massive wall & not enough stuff to fill it. I love the process of book shelf styling, as I love creating with symmetry & balance! (I know I have Issues!) but it does take to time to tweak. Its a shame that you don't have space for 2 bookshelves, you could certainly do them justice..... Looking good !!

  37. It's always tough to style a bookcase. I found that when I edited that's when it came out the best. My husband always tell me, just because you have something doesn't mean you always have to have it out. ;)
    Love your drapes!
