Design Crush: Andrew Maier, Inc.

Andrew Maier began his interior design career early... When he was just 12 years old, friends and neighbors began to hire him to decorate their homes! After graduating from college in Maryland, Andy indulged his love for horses, working as an exercise rider for some of the most notable steeplechase trainers in America. Eventually, his passion for design drew him back to New York, where he prop-styled hundreds of TV ads, music videos, and decor-driven photo shoots. The evolution into interior design was natural and inevitable.

In 2013, he was named one of Traditional Home's “NewTrad Designers to Watch.” His eponymous design firm, Andrew Maier, Inc., creates extraordinary rooms, mixing old and new, expensive and not.  In addition to practicality, great style abounds in Andy’s work, and he is known for his attention to detail. The result is a home that looks as if it has been evolving over time. Let's take a look at some highlights from his amazing portfolio!

Andy firmly believes that form follows function, and he advises his clients to live in their living rooms and dine in their dining rooms. Here are a few of Andrew Maier’s "tips of the trade," via Traditional Home...
  • Live in your living room If you don't already have a TV there, install one in a bookcase or conceal it in a cabinet.
  • Reupholster your traditional pieces Try an unexpected fabric—a favorite bright or a funky, modern print.
  • Make your area rug big enough  Rugs should fit under all of the furniture. Have one custom-made, or if necessary, use two side by side.
  • Avoid light-colored rugs They always seem to say, “Don’t walk on me.” Nothing is more elegant than rugs that are neutral in color and just rustic enough to be forgiving underfoot.
  • Introduce modern art by framing a child’s art project and hanging it in a “serious” location, such as over the dining room buffet or at the end of a hallway.
Andrew Maier's office is housed in a 1,700 square foot design studio in Locust Valley, New York. The space serves as a retail shop for beautifully upholstered furniture, antiques, art, and one-of-a-kind accessories. To learn more, please visit Andrew Maier, Inc.

Hannah Cecil Gurney's London Apartment

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed my obsession with hand painted wallpapers. De Gournay, Gracie, Zuber... I love them all! So naturally, when I spied the London apartment of Hannah Cecil Gurney, director of de Gournay and daughter of the company's founder, I became a little giddy. Hand painted wallpaper for days!! Photography by Natalie Dinham as featured in Elle Decoration Spain...

Wallpaper and Chinese Chippendale mirror by de Gournay, lamp by Porta Romana, and bedding by Fermoie.

Abundant natural light, de Gournay wallpaper, and custom made marble geometric floor.

This de Gournay wallpaper was inspired by one Yves Saint Laurent had in his Paris apartment.

Console, trunk, and red lamps by Collier Webb.

Passage to India, a panoramic de Gournay paper runs along the corridor, depicting early views of India. Antique armchair from Birgit Israel and mirror from Jamb London.

A glass cube encloses the shower with Fishes wallpaper from de Gournay.
