Christie’s has announced the upcoming auction of The Private Collection of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan! The Collection will be on view at Christie’s New York September 17 to 20 and is slated for sale September 21 and 22, with live and online components. The catalogue can be viewed online here, and I am enamored with every single item! Of particular interest are the furniture and decorative works supplied by William (Billy) Haines Inc. The catalogue also offers an incredible tour of the Reagan’s beautiful Bel Air home (it sold in July), which I am thrilled to feature today.
The home was designed by Ted Graber – Billy Haines‘ protégé – with his then partner, Peter Schifando. Let’s take a tour! Images provided by Christie’s.
Isn’t this a beautiful home? Classic and timeless! I love (and collect) auction catalogues, as they provide such an in-depth and intimate glimpse into the subject’s life, serving as an historic time capsule. Additional information on the auction can be found here, and the catalogue may be purchased here. Click here to take Christie’s spectacular virtual tour of this incredible home and here to tour the Reagan White House, which was also designed by Ted Graber.
Per the Reagans’ wishes, proceeds from the Collection sale are designated for The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. There are over 700 lots with estimates on individual items ranging from under $1,000 up to $50,000, and the auctions are expected to realize in excess of $2 million total.
Such lovely taste. Beautiful things but not overdone.
Classic, comfy, restrained, beautiful. We need another Haines these days.
What a gorgeous house! They were perfect! I love it all – is that a Norman Rockwell of Reagan? When he retired and had an office in Century City grown men would routinely break down after meeting him – even heavy metal rock bands. Ask anyone in LA at the time. It was incredible.
I love that framed photo of them laughing (taken in the Oval Office maybe?). I was very young when he was president, so my only memories are of my parents deriding Reganomics. What a great glimpse this is into their personal lives!
Wow! Great post Andrea!
I doubt we'll ever see that kind of elegance again in a President and his First Lady. Truly the best!
What an absolutely beautiful home! The wallpaper, the Herend, the decor – perfect AND timeless!! No matter your political beliefs, it is impossible to deny that they had impeccable taste and class! Thanks for sharing, Andrea!
California comfortable that I fell in love with many years ago. Has the style gone now with Getty gone too? When I think of old California, I think also of the golden light of San Francisco and the ease of living.
