I love this post! I think formal table setting is among the (many!) lost arts, and this etiquette post is so helpful! I also had never known the waitstaff signals for the cutlery and napkins – what an interesting covert language! And, a quick aside: I would also note that the blades of the knives always face the plate when setting the table… Proper manners and table etiquette – I’ll toast to that!

This is a great series, Andrea! A beautiful, gracious interior is only part of the equation. Hosts and guests can relax and enjoy themselves more fully if everyone knows some of these basic procedures. I’m loving this refresher course and will admit to having learned a few things! Xo

I love setting a formal table for my dinner guests. It makes the gathering so much more special. And guests are delighted when the see a lovely table setting! Thanks to Mrs. Meier for continuing such an important tradition, especially for our young ones.

Can we make any exceptions to etiquette rules? I consciously break one because I think it’s disgusting to put my napkin (which I intend to continue using through the rest of the meal) on the chair when I have to excuse myself from the table. Who knows who had sat in that chair before me and what they did while there (especially at restaurants)? 🙁

So… how do you tell your waiter that you fo not like your entree or that you’d like more of something? I thought you could signal the staff by using your knife and girl, but how?

I realize this is an old post, but I hope you’re reply: why shouldn’t you put a folded napkin inside the water glass?
