Recently, I had a reader request ideas on how to create a sophisticated bedroom for her 10 year old son. I had actually been giving this subject a great deal of thought, as I am planning on eventually redecorating my 4 year old son’s room from nursery to big boy room. It needs to be something sophisticated, masculine, and timeless… something that will stay with him through college and beyond. Below are several ideas that I think fit the bill!

After compiling this post, I realized how much I love plaid! What other ideas do you have for decorating boy rooms?

These are all great. My favourites are Leta Austin Foster’s and Joseph Minton’s.
Hi Cynthia,
I love those too! So classic!!

Count me inspired by all of these amazing rooms. I have an 8 year old son and can’t wait to get started redoing his room post hurricane Florence. Fingers crossed we will be in by Thanksgiving! Happy Monday!
I cannot wait to see what you come up with, I know it will be fabulous!!

Delighted to see so many examples in one place. Masculine decor seems not to be featured nearly enough! I love this, thank you!
Thank you, Kathie! 🙂

Another great post! ( I love plaid, too!)
Love this post! I also have a little boy and will be redoing his room when we move this year, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for inspiration.
James Farmer can do no wrong, IMO–I think the first image is my favorite!
Having two sons who are now 18 and 20, I really enjoyed this post. It was fun creating an outer space room and under-the-sea room, but I also love the sophisticated rooms too.
Dear Andrea,
Why must this redecoration last your son until college and beyond? Don’t you think, if it were your room, that you would long for a change in all that time? I realize redecoration is expensive and no one wants to live in constant uproar, but as the mother of two sons I must protest. Looking back, my husband’s career moves made redecoration inevitable, but I think my sons enjoyed the changes and it made them more open-minded as adults to changes in their surroundings. It also helped to open their eyes to the myriad possibilities of design and gave them an appreciation for it that they might not otherwise have developed.
Hi Sandy,
I’m all for “do it once and do it right,” but if my son wants to redecorate his room in the future, he certainly can! 🙂
Xx,
Andrea
