FAVORITE HOSTESS GIFTS

Santa Maria Novella Pomegranate in Scented Terracotta – One of my best friends gave us one as a housewarming gift and it filled our house with the most amazing, light yet welcoming scent. Not to mention it’s pretty to look at. It’s now my go-to gift.

BEST STOCKING STUFFERS

I like to get creative here. For my husband, it’s usually chocolate since he has a sweet tooth. His favorite chocolate treat is the Milk Chocolate Lindor Truffles by Lindt. My kids usually get pint-sized toys – they have been asking for a mini rubix cube on a keychain, so that will be a perfectly sized stocking stuffer this year!

GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN

I have three boys, and my five and seven year olds are very into these little spinner toys called Bey Blades. The best part about this toy is that it keeps them occupied for hours.

My older son is also into magic, and this magic kit has amazing tricks that are easy enough for a child to learn.

For the toddler in your life, I’d recommend building his or her library of books. We had a membership to Literati for a long time – it’s a great subscription service that sends a variety of books each month catered to your child’s age and interests. You can send back what you don’t like. It’s a no brainer gift.

GIFTS FOR PETS

Every pet could use a refresh on his or her bed – so why not splurge for something cute? The Foggy has some adorable options.

GIFTS FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

We usually gift each other trips for the holidays, but this year we are staying put in Austin, so I’ve been eyeing a new Brics suitcase for my husband since we have travel plans throughout next year.

Another timeless idea if you have a prepster husband, is to create a “life belt” made of needlepoint pictures that represent all of his favorite things. I did this for Bill a few years ago and it’s still one of his favorite gifts. This Etsy shop is a great resource.

GIFTS FOR TEACHERS AND NEIGHBORS

I always like to bake something. It’s the one time of year I’m in total baking mode and I like the heart-filled touch it provides. My go-to neighbor or teacher gift is spiced candied pecans. They are SO easy to make, and I just package them in mason jars and tie a ribbon around the jar. If you want to get extra fancy, you could have personalized gift tags made. My friend Caroline at Sweet Caroline Designs makes the cutest options.

WHAT IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR PERSONAL WISHLIST?

FAVORITE HOSTESS GIFTS

I always like to bring a hostess gift that is thoughtful and special for my host. Emily Post’s Etiquette The Centennial Edition has recently been released and would be a great hostess gift for someone who shares your sense of decorum.

Bring to a party Nest’s Rattan Grapefruit Scented Candle, a favorite of mine year-round because of the fresh scent.

As a house guest, I would recommend either Designing Camelot: The Kennedy White House Restoration and Its Legacy or Carleton Varney’s The Draper Touch: The High Life & High Style of Dorothy Draper biography. These are two of my favorite books from this past year and would be a welcome addition to any library!

BEST STOCKING STUFFERS

My parents have given each of us a special ornament every year and I love this tradition! Perhaps start a collection for someone, like the White House Historical Association’s annual ornament – I have been working on my collection. Or, even more special could be a yearly ornament from your favorite vacation destination, like The Greenbrier. Tucked in amongst the usual items of socks and toiletries, a fun surprise and nice addition to anyone’s stationary repertoire is the Write Away Leather Envelope from Dempsey & Carroll. These colorful leather pouches keep your notecards safe down in your suitcase while on the go. Speaking of toiletries, what about a fun new Dopp Kit from J McLaughlin?

GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN

We always had Legos under the tree at our house – such a wonderful toy with so many creative possibilities. Encourage a young designer or architect with a Lego Architecture set. Or start them on a fun adventure with the box set of the Harry Potter series. This wonderful story is a beloved classic! And for those that love a matching moment for the family, look no further than The Beaufort Bonnet Company with their classic, colorful clothing. I am loving their Intarsia sweaters with dogs, ducks, trains, and more – I only wish they came in my size!

GIFTS FOR PETS

Our pets deserve a special treat at Christmas! Create a custom needlepoint collar for your pup from Lycette, something they will have a lifetime. Choose a belt of your choice, add their name, then with the remaining portion make yourself a key fob. Celebrate your pets with a fun Herend figurine in their favorite color – a classic that will make you smile!

GIFTS FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Rather than just items, think if there is a special experience you can do together. Is it a joint membership to your favorite museum like The Met? Or what about giving a fun Stubbs & Wootton Weekender Duffle Bag, a Polaroid Camera, and airline tickets to set out on an adventure together. Frame your special memories in one of my R! needlepoint frames in classic patterns available exclusively at Lycette Designs.

GIFTS FOR TEACHERS AND NEIGHBORS

I have a few go-to’s for friends, neighbors, and those people that help make life easier throughout the year. I love sending a taste of my hometown, Cincinnati, with Graeter’s legendary ice cream or Busken Bakery’s signature smile iced sugar cookies. Or if I am in New York, something from Saint Ambroeus or Sprinkles is always a treat!

WHAT IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR PERSONAL WISHLIST?

I generally put together a pretty comprehensive, lengthy wishlist. I like to give (lots of) options to family and have been known to be a little picky. However, at the top of my list is an English Bulldog this holiday season!

Tug Rice

TUG RICE, ARTIST

FAVORITE HOSTESS GIFTS

I’ve made the mistake of giving a plant that requires too much care. Don’t assume they will love it or have the time to devote to keeping it alive. (If they’re anything like me, the plant will be dead in two days.) Stick to the classics: champagne, soaps, candles. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. I might suggest something like this from Halcyon Day.

BEST STOCKING STUFFERS

I like when these are simple and not too serious. Candy, popcorn, a Barnes and Nobel gift card… But whatever they are, they should be gift wrapped like any other present.

GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN

A classic hardcover children’s book. Maybe your favorite growing up. Inscribe a personalized note on the inside, with the year – one day when they’re older it will bring back happy memories for them. My favorite book as a kid was The Jolly Christmas Postman.

GIFTS FOR PETS

I do think pet portraits are great, even if it’s more for you than them. If the portrait has a sense of humor about it and is put in an “important” gilded frame, it’s even funnier because, let’s face it, the pet has no idea. But if you want to get them something they’ll actually appreciate, there are bakeries that specialize in gourmet pet treats.

GIFTS FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Artwork is a deeply personal gift. If you’re buying for someone you love, find something that reminds you of them. It doesn’t have to be literal — it could be an abstract piece that somehow captures their spirit. And it doesn’t need to be enormous; a small drawing is more intimate. Could give them a signed Enthusiast print from Eerdmans New York, inspired by their interests.

GIFTS FOR TEACHERS AND NEIGHBORS

Peppermint bark…I love it and you only really get to have it during the holidays. Any good chocolate is usually appreciated, especially if it comes in a beautiful tin that the person can repurpose. I like to give this one if the person is a New Yorker or loves the City.

WHAT IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR PERSONAL WISHLIST?

A large, old oil painting of a dog – preferably a Newfoundland. Something dark and moody and majestic. And these champagne coupe glasses. And more Shaggy Dog sweaters from J. Press – I wear them all winter.

BEST STOCKING STUFFERS

GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN

There are always Christmas/holiday fairs to find handmade gifts whether it’s Union Square in NYC or in the country. We have a Christmas bazaar in Washington CT, and I think nothing is more special than a handmade toy.

GIFTS FOR PETS

Being a pet owner, it’s equally exciting to see my dog’s expression when given a gift, usually if it’s a really cute toy it gets ripped limb to limb in seconds or a ball, which needs to be thrown non-stop. Over the past few years, I’ve been giving organic treats, so the giving continues

GIFTS FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER

What is better than a monogrammed piece of jewelry? So personal and thoughtful. Asprey has lovely monogramed rings, or a piece of antique jewelry at auction or with a vintage dealer. I bought a lovely ancient Roman carnelian ring recently at auction.

FAVORITE HOSTESS GIFTS

A chilled bottle of Champagne or high-end sparkling wine with a big bow wrapped around the neck is always welcome and elevates any party mood. If I know the host(s) very well, then I will look for a gift with special meaning to them, but nothing that will end up collecting dust.

Either a luxury consumable to bring the evening of or a luscious floral arrangement delivered the day before the party!

BEST STOCKING STUFFERS

So much of the holiday season centers around special meals, that kitchen gadgets are not only fun stocking stuffers, but also help with all the gustatory preparations.

Otherwise, a pair of Stubbs and Wootton will be perfect for dinner at Le Bilboquet followed by drinks at HMF in Palm Beach this Season.

GIFTS FOR TEACHERS AND NEIGHBORS

I love to choose from the delectable collection of South Florida’s award-winning Castronovo Chocolate. Their bars have gorgeous packaging and are a luxurious delicacy for teachers or neighbors with a sweet tooth. Castronovo Chocolates are made from heirloom cocoa beans using a sustainable, small batch process, so these treats are delicious and eco-conscious as well. My favorites are the white chocolate infused with lemon and sea salt and the Honduras Dark Milk with Flour de Sel.
