Step Inside a Dallas Designer’s Historic Office Space

We are huge fans of Dallas-based interior designer Josh Pickering, founder of Pickering House Interiors, so naturally we jumped at the opportunity for an office tour and interview. A Texas native, Josh developed a passion for design early on in life. Trained in architecture and a designer by trade, he firmly believes in the unity of the architecture and interiors process. After graduating with a degree in architecture, he made the immediate shift into the world of interior design. Following time spent in Texas design firms, and then several years working with legendary designer Bunny Williams in New York, Josh established his design firm, Pickering House, in 2016.

From the beginning, Josh wanted to create an office that was like one of the rooms he would design. The office building is a century-old eclectic Mediterranean, which provides a welcome contrast to the highly-edited nature of his high-rise apartment. When you walk in, the walls are covered in watercolors from past projects. The conference room is a blend of styles; the lacquered Belgian chests, mid-century table and refurbished chairs, the Spanish chandelier and neoclassical console that he personally refinished all work harmoniously to create a whimsical and cozy atmosphere. The gravitas and gusto of the more substantial pieces is contrasted by the soft background of the damask linen-upholstered walls. The juxtaposition of layers fosters creative energy as he thinks outside of the box for client projects. The warmth of the terracotta color in the office paired with the white furniture and abundant daylight creates a bright and happy atelier.

“Creating this workplace haven was so important to me because the energy of the environment you work in influences the work that you do,” said Josh.
