Carleton Varney is one of my all-time favorite designers, and he has inspired my love of interior design tremendously. So naturally, I was thrilled to see him profiled in the October issue of Palm Beach Illustrated. A Q&A unveils many fun facts about this legendary designer that you may not know…
Varney paired his Akakina floral wallpaper with pink and white stripes in this Palm Beach bedroom.
Did you know that Mr. Varney actually began his career as as schoolteacher? He received his master’s degree in education from New York University. Eager to break into the interior design industry, he began work for Dorothy Draper & Co. in 1960 doing everything from cleaning floors to washing dishes. In 1967, at the age of 30, he bought the company and continues to serve as president today.
Mr. Varney has written more than 30 books, and his next book Decorating On the Waterfront will be released in December…. I can hardly wait!
