Ever since seeing this snippet of blogger Julia Engel‘s Bowood chintz bedroom, I have been dying to see more… so naturally, I could not have been more excited when I saw her home featured in Southern Living over the weekend! Julia has over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, and she recently launched her Gal Meets Glam Collection of beautiful dresses that push “past trendy to celebrate classic sophistication, feminine elegance and romantic details.” Needless to say, I am a huge fan.
Julia and her husband, photographer Thomas Berolzheimer, moved from San Francisco to Charleston in 2016 after falling in love with the charming city and this Lowcountry cottage in the city’s Old Village District. “It’s in a magical spot with a water view from the front porch and on a wonderful street,” said Julia. However, they wanted to make changes to the floor plan and redecorate to reflect their aesthetic… traditional and colorful with lovely florals that reflect Julia’s lifestyle blog and brand. Working with Beau Clowney Architects, the footprint of the circa 2005 house remained mostly the same, but the layout was rearranged.
To guide the interiors, Julia called upon Charleston designer Olivia Brock of Torrance Mitchel Designs (Olivia also worked with Hanna Seabrook on her Kentucky home). “Despite the fact that it’s effectively a brand-new house, we pulled in so many timeless, handmade, and artisanal things that create character and give it that old-world feel,” says Olivia. And the results are perfection… Images below are via Southern Living and @juliahengel.
