We are still sifting through boxes from the move into our new home, and I am trying to finalize the interior design. A decade ago, I learned of Scalamandre’s Shanghai wallpaper, thanks to Beth at Chinoiserie Chic, and I have wanted to use it ever since. There is a tiny little powder room under our stairs, and despite its diminutive size, I wanted to make a big impact… The little powder room provided the perfect opportunity! Once the wallpaper was selected, the first thing I knew I had to have was a red pagoda lantern from Coleen and Company. I am a huge fan of Coleen’s work! Then, I selected a Bristol sink with bamboo accents from J. Tribble. It is painted Deep Rose by Benjamin Moore, along with the baseboards and crown molding. We made the back of the door flat so it could also be wallpapered, and Shannon, our fabulous contractor, personally gold leafed the ceiling. I cannot wait for it to be complete! In the meantime, let’s look at some beautiful rooms featuring Shanghai wallpaper…
Shanghai was introduced in the 1990s as a collaboration between the uber talented Amanda Clark, director of Altfield Gallery in Hong Kong, and Scalamandre’s former creative director Donna May Woods. The design is based on some of Amanda’s paintings for her gallery, and you can see the inspiration on the exquisite dining room walls at Seend Manor, her home in the English countryside. I have enjoyed writing about Amanda over the years, so learning about Shanghai’s origins made me love it even more!

Shanghai is available for purchase through the trade or via Decorator’s Best. It is absolutely breathtaking in person!

I am not a fan , i prefer scenes by Zuber instead if I had to use storytelling via wallpapers. That said, the pattern will make small space look big. Hope the move back to the big D has been awesome!
Your powder room is going to be gorgeous! Love your blog. It is always wonderful. You have the best taste.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Anne! 🙂 We are super excited!

I received my sample of this paper today and it could not be more stunning! I have been looking for years for a paper to use to replace what I have now in the panels in my powder room. All the colors in this paper are exactly what I need! Chinese red ceiling, yellow grasscloth, a pale mossy green vanity. I could not be more thrilled!!
Thank you!
Hi Kathleen,
Oh I am delighted that you love it as much as I do! You won’t be disappointed! 🙂
