Chuck Chewning’s Pointe Coupee: A Charming Lowcountry River Home

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Meet Chuck Chewning, a design maestro who has spent over three decades crafting luxurious residential and hospitality spaces that are straight out of dreams. His vibrant design firm, Charles H Chewning Interiors, is nestled in the enchanting coastal paradise of Savannah, Georgia, where Chewning seamlessly combines timeless elegance, antiquity, a dash a of metropolitan flare.

Chewning’s remarkable achievements include prestigious projects worldwide, such as the restoration of the historic and sublime Gritti Palace in Venice, Italy, which earned him the International Hotel & Property Award and a prominent feature in Architectural Digest. His creative genius has also left a lasting impact as the former creative director of Donghia, where he enhanced the brand’s global legacy. Chewning’s expertise has garnered accolades at renowned establishments like The Prince de Galles in Paris and The Grande Bretagne in Athens.

In the spring of 2022, a remarkable opportunity emerged—a perfect location on West Jones that seamlessly accommodated a growing design firm and an exquisite garden shop. Situated within the recently restored West Broad development, a haven of historical significance in downtown Savannah, 406 W. Jones became the esteemed domicile of Charles H Chewning Interiors and a mesmerizing shop known as Courtyard by Chuck Chewning—an immersive, meticulously curated retail wonderland, wherein antiquarian urns, vintage outdoor furniture, exquisite tabletop decor, delightful gifts, and beyond, gracefully converge in harmonious splendor.

Currently, Chewning’s firm is buzzing with exciting projects, including the completion of Pointe Coupee in Palmetto Bluff—a mesmerizing embodiment of the unhurried rhythm of life in the charming Lowcountry. Inspired by the enchanting spirit of the French colonial architecture found at Parlange plantation, Chewning brought forth a historically guided river home that has stolen our hearts. Let’s take a look!

  1. Gorgeous, so perfectly done but like it was organic. We stayed at the Gritti last fall, and it was likewise exquisite.

  2. Gorgeous! There are so many exquisite details. Do you happen to know anything about the stair runner? The borders are beautiful. Do you think they might have been bought separately and added to the runner, or is the runner available with those borders?
    Thank-you!
