Style Profile: Design by Tula

By Micah Hanvey

Inspired by design and architecture from both the past and present, Tula Summerford, founder of Design by Tula, is known for creating rooms that are richly layered with vibrant color, patterned fabrics, and treasured objects from around the world. Her curiosity in architecture and design blossomed at an early age with a desire to constantly rearrange her childhood home. With over thirty years of textile and design experience, Tula’s innate aesthetic sensibilities, love of pattern, and keen attention to detail result in a variety of interiors that are distinctive of her vision and unique to each client’s personal style.

We are delighted to welcome Tula to The Glam Pad today for a Style Profile Q&A and a peek through her exquisite portfolio! Welcome, Tula!

Q: What designers inspire you?

A: I’m particularly inspired by Jean Louis Deniot. His ability to blend textures and styles with such timeless elegance really speaks to me.

Q: When and how did you first become interested in interior design?

A: My interest began early- I was always rearranging my bedroom and experimenting with the rooms in my parents’ home. That passion naturally led me to study at The Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue interior design professionally.

Q: What upcoming projects are you excited about?

A: I’m really looking forward to designing an Emerald Room for the Kips Bay Showhouse in Dallas. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore new ideas and create something truly unique.

Q: How do you like to spend your free time?

A: Outside of work, I enjoy tennis, Pilates, and yoga to stay active. I also love playing Mahjong—it’s a wonderful way to unwind!

Q: What is your favorite house you’ve designed, and why?

A: Earlier this year, I completed the redesign of a historic 1893 home. The client gave me complete creative freedom, allowing me to incorporate exceptional textiles, distinctive art pieces, and curated furnishings from around the world. Seeing the project come together so beautifully was incredibly rewarding.

Q: Which room do you enjoy designing the most or find the easiest, and why?

A: Dining rooms are my favorite to design because they come naturally to me. I often start with a standout fabric or wallpaper and let the rest of the design evolve from there. With just a few key pieces, the space feels complete and inviting.
