In the Countryside with Paula Sutton of Hill House Vintage

One of my favorite daydreams is to someday give up big city life and retire to the English Countryside, a dream shared by Paula Sutton, creator of the popular blog The Hill House Diaries… Born and reared in London, the mother of three worked in the fashion industry for years, serving as Head of Press for Elite Premier Model agency (when Supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington were in their heyday) and producing shoots for Elle magazine.  But one day Paula decided to take the plunge, and off she moved with her family to the countryside. A lover of traditionally English interiors and designers such as Nancy Lancaster and John Fowler, Paula enjoys finding bargains at auctions, carboot sales, eBay, local flea markets, and antique fairs. She paints and restores many of her treasures to sell at a local decorative antiques emporium in Norfolk.  Her blog features interior decoration to suit all budgets, vintage finds, traditional British design and English country house inspiration.  Today, we will take a peek inside Paula’s dreamy world via images from her Instagram account (with over 400,000 followers!) @hillhousevintage.

Beautiful, classic, and timeless style! For ongoing inspiration, I highly recommend following @hillhousevintage. Along with lovely images from her home and adventures in the English Countryside, Paula’s sense of humor and delightful disposition will bring joy to your day.

  1. I love Paula! her house, her dog, her style – her Handmade cakes!!! I think she is single-handedly bringing back the full long skirt!! Bravo!!! Thank you for featuring her!!

  2. She is one of my favorites on IG. Her outdoor picnic setups, in particular, are dreamy. I love her house specifically because it truly looks naturally evolved – more cozy homely comfort than “decorated”. If you didn’t know her history, you would expect that this house had been owned for generations.

  3. Hi Andrea! I just looked at the pictures so far (haven’t read your text yet) and it’s beautiful! Unstaged, full of things that look loved and real yet it doesn’t look cluttered. She looks like a happy, genuine person and I love her dresses! I just love it – thank you for a real shot in the arm!

    • Dear Elizabeth,

Paula is just so uplifting, and I love her dresses too! She mentioned in one of her posts that she is “inspired by old Hollywood and by the fashion photography of the 1950’s and 60’s,” which of course makes me love her all the more. 🙂

      Xx,
      Andrea

  11. Great to see a Black woman influencing fashion, decor and style, especially in 2020! I’ve been collecting Town and Country since 1991 and I have seen how it has evolved over time to include Black women in many of its articles. I am a Black woman who really loves fashion, beauty and decorating….and studying European Royalty!! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading September 2020 Town and Country and can truly say it has been a treat!! The article penned by Susan Fales-Hill to her daughter is priceless!!

Way to go Town and Country!! Hurrah for Paula Sutton, as I am now a fan!!

  12. I just love this home. Everything feels so familiar and cozy.
Thank you so much for sharing this. Can’t wait to buy the book!!
