A Blue and White Dutch Colonial by Madcap Cottage

There have been so many wonderful new books released this fall, and it has been such fun reviewing my favorites. Today, I’m sharing a home tour from Prints Charming by Madcap Cottage which was released yesterday. Written by John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon, this book not only teaches you how to create beautiful interiors with prints and patterns, it also serves as a primer on history’s influential designers with “you ought to know” one-page introductions to Dorothy Draper, Sister Parish, David Hicks, Laura Ashley, Billy Baldwin, Rose Cumming, Syrie Maugham, Nancy Lancaster, and more.  Design legend Carleton Varney states in his foreword, “These boys know patterns like nobody’s business and have created their own decorating style, a look of yesteryear glamour that’s also decidedly right, right now. They combine the colorful treasures of a time gone by with a contemporary flair.”

Today we are touring a 1920s-era Dutch Colonial renovated by the Madcap Gents. Their task was to create a cool, calm, and soothing environment that would repurpose many pieces of furniture inherited from parents and grandparents and give them a new chapter in which to shine. Patterns in updated traditional florals, toiles, and foliage hold it all together with a common blue theme, giving the home a storyline and connecting the dots from room to room. “Traditional never goes out of style, so invest in classic pieces such as Chippendale sofas and timeless wallpapers revved up with bold colors for a look that will only need to be refreshed as the years go by,” say John and Jason… and I couldn’t agree more! Let’s take a look inside.

This house is perfectly charming, and I couldn’t love the Madcap Gents more! You may recall I featured a tour of their fabulous 1930s Regency Revival style home here and here, and John guest posted for The Glam Pad here. Prints Charming by Madcap Cottage – Create Absolutely Beautiful Interiors with Prints & Patterns is available now via Amazon. This is one you will absolutely want to add to your library! Also in conjunction with the book release, Jason and John have curated an exclusive sale with One Kings Lane so you can recreate their classic yet whimsical style. 1. The Madcaps came to an auction in Hudson that I attended, and I follow them on Instagram and Facebook. The House of Bedlam (in Highpoint, NC) is one of my very favourites. It’s a masterpiece. They also have Madcap Cottage here in the Hudson Valley.
They did a super job on this house. They mix prints in such a courageous way. I would never have the nerve, but the rooms are beautiful. Prints Charming is right. They take “granny style” to a whole new level. Love the kitchen ideas, and I have those same chairs in my kitchen. I think the drop cupboard next to the sink is actually the dishwasher, and I will be integrating mine in the same way. The stove hood with the plate backsplash is a master stroke. I have that same firescreen on my fireplace and the carpet in the living room is FABULOUS! Wonder where they got it? Love the Madcap guys – wanna hug ’em 😉
