I was pleased to see this glamorous Miami Beach home featured in the current issue of Architectural Digest. “A lot of people here won’t restore an old home like this; they just knock it down and throw up a big modernist box,” said interior designer and home owner Austin Harrelson. And it is so true. Sadly, there are four “big modernist boxes” going up my neighborhood alone. Austin and his wife Sara, the founder and editor in chief of Cultured magazine, opted for a complete renovation of their 1936 British Colonial style home. Their goal was to open up and modernize the space, all while retaining the classical bones they originally fell in love with.
The 5,000-square-foot home sits on a nearly half-acre lot with a sparkling pool (often filled with inflatable flamingos) that overlooks Miami Beach’s Surprise Lake, the tropical canal connecting Biscayne Bay to the Intracoastal Waterway. Photography by François Dischinger.

Oh wow! That is a really, really beautiful and interesting house! It’s not just the usual boring stage set. That’s a gorgeous house that is really appropriate and which they really live in it seems. They seem like very interesting people as well. I love it!
Wow Andrea,
What a nice family-love how the editorial includes them-
This house and these people could put your beloved PB to shame!
So chic, so fabulous, so editorial!

A real family home decorated so graciously. Maybe this couple spent as much as they would have for a big box but it wouldn’t have the grounded feeling this home does. They captured the British colonies look and feel Excellent
I love that they didn’t obliterate the old gal but rather gave her a makeover. The last time we drove through Palm Beach I was so disappointed to see all the monstrous concrete tombs. I dream of a “Lilly Pulitzer” inspired home set within palms of all kinds where I can walk barefoot and fancy free….and of course it’s PINK & GREEN. ?
