A 1920s Alabama Beauty by Jenny Holladay

Interior designer Jenny Holladay has built her career on beauty. After graduating with a degree in Art History from the University of Virginia, she worked as a talent agent for Ford Models Inc. in San Francisco and Chicago. Five years later, she decided to pursue her long-standing interest in interior design which led her to join Summer Thornton Design, and eventually move back home to Richmond to open her eponymous firm, Jenny Holladay Design.

We first fell in love with Jenny’s work when her exquisite Chicago townhouse was featured by FREDERIC magazine, and we are delighted to share highlights today from a beautiful project she and her team completed in Mobile, Alabama. Styling by Julialake Graham; Photography by Laura Rowe.

This Greek Revival home, built in 1923, is located in the historic Ashland Place neighborhood. The project began with a leaking shower that came through the kitchen ceiling, so the couple decided it was time to update the bedroom suites and the kitchen. An active family of five, they wanted their home to be more tailored and a reflection of their tastes.

They love wallpaper, so Jenny and her team used it in a variety of ways—on walls, ceilings, and borders—to add a layer of softness and detail. “Their ceilings are over 10 feet throughout, so the wallpaper really helped cozy up the spaces,” she said.

“The tween girl was very specific! She wanted a pink room with Hydrangeas, so we used Cowtan & Tout’s Chantilly in pink & green for her drapery. It was perfect! We also built a new closet wall for her that utilized the space much better and looks beautiful, especially with the fabric cabinet fronts,” said Jenny.

Jenny and her team tore out the entire bathroom so that she could have an updated private bathroom that is sweet but will age with her.

“It’s perfect, and has tons more storage!” she said.

The primary bedroom is quite large, so Jenny and her team installed a beautiful grasscloth to add texture. They brought in pattern with the Alice Sergeant Andalus drapery fabric which they matched on the bed as well.

“The client immediately fell in love with that Alice Sergeant fabric, so we knew it needed to be the star of the show!” Jenny explained.

A beautiful and timeless home with exquisite attention to detail… We adore every single inch!

Jenny Holladay has been featured in House Beautiful, Frederic, Vogue, Galerie, RHome, and The Glam Pad, including both her independent designs and collaborations with Summer Thornton Design.
