Nantucket by Design, Tillett Textiles Latest Collection, and Newport Design Week

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at Nantucket by Design, Tillett Textiles Latest Collection, and Newport Design Week. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Nantucket by Design

If you needed another excuse to escape to Nantucket this summer, consider this your sign! Nantucket by Design returns this weekend, July 13 through 16, bringing some of the design world’s most beloved names together for four days of interiors, architecture, gardens, craftsmanship, and lots of fun.

Hosted by the Nantucket Historical Association, this year’s event marks the tenth anniversary of Nantucket by Design, and the lineup is a good one. Alexa Hampton and Corey Damen Jenkins will sit down for a “Design Duet,” David Netto joins Sarah Wetenhall for a conversation on breathing new life into the historic Hedges Inn, and Fernando Wong will share a peek at his plans to restore the gardens of Nantucket’s Hadwen House.

The festivities culminate with a Design Luncheon with Cordelia de Castellane and Tom Scheerer, moderated by Veranda Editor-in-Chief Steele Marcoux, followed by a first look at The Nantucket Show. With this year’s theme being “Etched in Time,” we know it is bound to be wonderful. And who does not like few days on Nantucket surrounded by beautiful houses and brilliant design minds? More information about the weekend can be found here!

Tillett Textiles Latest Collection

Speaking of Nantucket, Schumacher has just dipped into the archives with a beautiful new collection from Tillett Textiles, and we are completely charmed!

Founded by the husband-and-wife duo Leslie and D.D. Tillett in the 1940s, Tillett Textiles became known for its hand-screened fabrics and imaginative approach to pattern, finding fans in Bunny Mellon, Jackie Kennedy, Sister Parish, and Albert Hadley. Quite the fan club!

During the 1960s, the pair traveled to Nantucket, where they were commissioned to create designs celebrating the island’s beauty, craft, and artistry. Now, more than sixty years later, those wonderfully playful, painterly patterns are feeling as fresh as ever.

Based on the Tilletts’ original hand-painted artwork, the new nautical-inspired fabrics and wallpapers are printed by hand in the United States using the same meticulous techniques that made the textile house so beloved. And what better place to celebrate than Nantucket. During Nantucket by Design, Schumacher will toast the collection with a beach party inspired by the very island that started it all. We are ready to cover a seaside cottage in every last pattern.

Newport Design Week

On the subject of design events, just off the heels of Nantucket by Design comes the crème de la crème of them all: Newport Design Week! One of our favorite events on the design circuit, the three-day celebration brings together some of the industry’s greatest minds for a program rooted in architecture, history, and historic preservation.

This year’s theme, “250 Years of Cross-Currents in American Design,” explores the global influences that have shaped American interiors from the Colonial era to today. Expect a packed lineup of lectures, conversations, book signings, and lively celebrations, all unfolding against the rather spectacular backdrop of Newport and it’s incredible historic homes.

Ochre Court

The festivities kick off at the Newport Art Museum before moving to the magnificent Ochre Court, with a summer soirée at Rough Point thrown in for good measure. Clear your calendars and dust off your Newport summer best! More information and tickets can be found here.
