In 1938, Harold Holdway, a young English artist with Spode, was sent to produce ideas for the American Christmas market. He returned with a Christmas tree design, adorned with gifts hanging from the branches. The design was altered after a US sales representative explained that in America, gifts were placed around the foot of the tree. Holdway had never seen a Christmas tree, which is also why the Spode design was topped with a Father Christmas figure instead of an angel. (source) It proved a huge success! For 80 years Spode’s iconic Christmas Tree pattern has been a best seller, loved for its nostalgia and warm recollections of Christmases past.
The beauty of Christmas Tree is that it can be dressed up or down for any occasion… Pair it with your sterling silver and fine crystal for a more formal tablescape, or with stainless, some festive tartan napkins, and Spode’s Christmas Tree glasses for a more casual feel. And the best part is that today’s Christmas Tree is dishwasher safe, which makes for easy breezy clean up!
