Christmas with Southern Lady

December 14, 2018

For those of us who love timeless and traditional style, it can be challenging to find ongoing inspiration. Three sources I turn to that never let me down are Southern Lady, Southern Home, and Victoria magazine, all produced by Hoffman Media. I have been reading Victoria since it was first released in the late 1980s, followed by Southern Lady in 1999 and Southern Home in 2015. These publications offer the most beautiful classic inspiration throughout the year… and at Christmastime, they truly outdo themselves! Today, I would like to share a little holiday inspiration, courtesy of Southern Lady. We will start with highlights from their November/December issue, followed by a glimpse inside their Holidays 2018 special supplement. They even offer two elegant Christmas books, and for daily inspiration, you will definitely want to follow @southernladymag on Instagram… Let’s take a peek!

There is no one on earth who takes more pleasure than setting a beautiful table, especially at Christmas. But one must always be aware that we are setting a table to EAT A MEAL, not as a stage setting. When one gets too many “things” on the table, or the arrangement is too tall or takes up too much space, then we did not “get it right”, no matter how pretty is might be. The same is true if one has a non-antique table. Newer tables (new meaning made in the past 70 years!) are narrower than antique tables. One simply cannot do a “Downtown Abbey” type of table setting on such tables – there is not enough room. No individual bread & butters, no salad plate on the table (it shouldn’t be anyway – it should be served on top of the place plate or empty dinner plate), fewer glasses.

Many of the table settings shown, while using lovely things, would not be comfortable to eat at – where does one find a place to put ones glass back down!

My DD and I are fortunate to have old tables that are wide – her’s is 54″ wide; mine is 56″. Of course, finding a cloth that will fit such tables is a challenge! She inherited my late MIL’s and I finally found one on eBay! Fegurson’s told me that they no longer even have looms to make such large cloths anymore, much to the chagrin of many an English stately home whose clothes are finally in shreds. At that point, one resorts to placemats!
