Design Crush: Suellen Gregory

With an extraordinary career spanning over 35 years, Suellen Gregory confesses she eats, sleeps, and breathes design. Known for her ability to meld traditional decor with a fresh perspective, her work from decades past remains just as crisp and beautiful today. Suellen and I share a love of timeless decor, chintz, pink, green, and blue. Needless to say, I am a HUGE fan, and I was so thrilled when Suellen agreed to a Q&A! Let's take a look at some of my favorite examples of her work, and get to know Suellen...

Q:  How do you define your style?

A:  My favorite adjectives are classic, pretty, and liveable.  I think if I check these boxes on all projects I’m doing really well!

Q:  Where do you find your greatest inspiration?

A:  I find inspiration everywhere – travel – books – magazines – other amazing talented designers – clients – it’s everywhere!

Q:  What is your approach to working with a client?

A:  I always begin with what they love – what they want – what they need and build a plan from there.  I love incorporating things that the client has that have meaning for them.  If we start there we can’t miss.

Q:  I have been seeing a slow return to classic “traditional” design… Is this something you are experiencing?

A:  Yes – very much so and that is my happy place……I am really comfortable with classics.

Q:  Which interior designers have influenced your aesthetic and career?

A:  Nicky Haslam – his painted finishes and curtains are amazing.  I love Charlotte Moss, Bunny Williams, Suzanne Rheinstein, Tom Sheerer.  I think Jeffrey Bilhuber is a genius.  I am devouring everything that Steven Gambrel is doing.  I love the work of Ashley Whittaker, Amanda Nisbet, and Summer Thornton……plus I would like to have drinks with them!

Q:  Do you have favorite colors, fabrics, accessories, etc. that you like to incorporate into your designs?

A:  I design for the client and the project.  I have favorite greens, blues, pinks – but every project is different – so the color comes from the project and that is the reason that every project is individual and a wonderful challenge!

Q:  How do you go about designing a room that will stand the test of time?

A:  I start with elements the client loves – things with meaning – and I build a scheme from there – that makes my work so personal and that attachment forms a bond between the client and the interior that lasts the longest!

My favorite Bowood chintz, by Colefax and Fowler.

Q:  What are your hobbies outside of decorating?

A:  Grandchildren, family, and friends.  I am also a voracious reader.

"I think you should buy things that are as good as you can afford. … I always bought the best [furniture] I could afford at the time. In so doing, I’ve gotten furniture that has been recovered many times. … Just like with clothes, if you want to do trendy, don’t spend a lot of money on it. … You don’t want to see all of the things you’ve spent good money on in everybody’s houses. … Your kids will grow up with things they come to treasure. Buy things that reflect you. Don’t just buy something to fill a space,"

  3. Suellen Gregory captures my style and thoughts, don't buy something to fill in space. I have furniture, baskets, toile fabric, blue and white vases that I love and many are over 20 years old.
