  1. The set of Sotheby’s auction catalogues for Mr Buatta’s sale are amongst my most prized possessions. If I was going to be stranded on a desert island with just one form of reading matter, these would be it. There are wonderful examples of virtually any item and era you could name. Heaven.

    • Thank you so much Susan,
We need color in our lives, if we go too long without it, beige-fatigue creeps in and we become boring and depressed.
I’m happy the idea of new antiques resonated with you. Of course I love antiques too, but I think old and new antiques can have parallel lives, and just like us, some are young and starting new, and some are weathered with the beauty of age.

  2. THANK YOU for this lovely feature, as usual, from a great website. Mario Buatta’s designs have been significant in my life—and I am a teacher who has never been rich. His style influenced me even as a young single mom—I had beautiful chintz balloon shades, antique quilts, and even a lovely child’s crib turned into a day bed covered with toile (I love to sew–and this enabled me always to have a beautiful home on a budget). I have updated some things—adding more tribal fabrics from inspiration of Carolina Irving, but Mario Buatta informs my taste even today. I have recently acquired 6 grandchildren ages 8-17 from a long custody battle. We are crammed into my cottage but I am trying to make sure everything is lovely. We just replaced our utilitarian white board with a large antique gold gilded mirror and it just these little changes that make a huge difference. We write on it just like the white board. I have the Staffordshire dogs I brought back from my student days in London, England. I think that is an important point—that is taste was not just for the wealthy.

    • Ms. Olsen,
      Your note is so moving…
I’d like to paint a small gift for you. “pro-bono” doesn’t have to just apply to attorneys 🙂 Please contact me if you’d like to arrange this.
