Remembering Jane Birkin

The world has bid farewell to the beloved Jane Birkin, who gracefully passed away at the age of 76 on Sunday. Jane’s remarkable life is adorned with countless achievements, from her unforgettable musical collaborations with her long-time partner, an icon in his own right, Serge Gainsbourg, to her impressive acting prowess showcased both on stage and screen, and of course, her gamine presence and unique look.

It is undoubtedly within the realm of fashion that her illustrious legacy shines brightest. Hailing from London but embraced as a star in her adopted homeland of France, Jane Birkin has always been hailed as an unparalleled style icon. Her influence in the world of fashion remains unparalleled, and this is no small part due to the iconic Hermès bag that proudly bears her name.

As the story goes, in 1981 Birkin received an unexpected upgrade on her Air France flight and found herself seated next to none other than Jean-Louise Dumas, the esteemed Chief Executive of Hermès. In a scramble, the contents of Birkin’s purse, including her precious diary, accidentally spilled onto the floor. Dumas kindly offered a suggestion: perhaps a bag with pockets would be more fitting. She expressed that if Hermès were to craft a bag larger than the Kelly, spacious enough to house a woman’s essentials—she would gladly bid farewell to her signature oversized basket bag.

Dumas then pulled out a pencil and an airplane sick bag. Birkin quickly sketched her concept of the perfect handbag. This momentous creative endeavor would ultimately give birth to the timeless and iconic Birkin bag, which Hermès introduced to the world in 1984.

Her unique blend of timeless sophistication and chic nonchalance led her to “it-girl” fame in the 1960s and she has since left an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, cementing her as a true icon for the ages. As we remember and celebrate her extraordinary life, Jane’s captivating fashion legacy will forever sparkle, guiding future generations of style aficionados with her eternal charm.

The Laundress Makes a Comeback

The Laundress triumphantly returns to the market after a six-month recall over bacteria concerns. As reported by Modern Retail, the revered Unilever-owned brand took swift action last fall, recalling its entire line of luxury cleaning products to address safety concerns related to elevated bacteria levels. The move garnered significant attention, with customers expressing their apprehension, and ultimately leading to the demise of the cult-favorite laundry line.

Now with a new manufacturer and improved formulas, they unveil a captivating collection, embracing pharmaceutical-grade production standards. This remarkable effort aims to win back trust, ensuring unmatched quality and safety for their cherished customers. Time to restock on their Wool & Cashmere Shampoo!
