Banana Republic Home, Camille Albertine, and Alice Palmer & Co.

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at Banana Republic Home, Camille Albertine, and Alice Palmer & Co.’s latest collection. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Banana Republic Home

A venerable icon in the world of fashion since 1978, Banana Republic now sets its sights on the world of refined living with the grand debut of BR Home. This collection boasts an array of luxurious bedding, rugs, pillows, and decor, and is slated to carry the brand’s renewed identity of ease and sophistication.

The label’s first forayed the concept quietly in the fall of 2022 with the introduction of ART, Curated by Banana Republic—a collection of exclusive masterpieces crafted by esteemed artists and photographers. Now, the initial collection has been released in 16 of the company’s 400 stores as well as online.

In the early 2000s, a newly reimagined Banana Republic, began to offer home a collection. Within the confines of its stores, a meticulously curated array of bed and bath merchandise could be found in the back of the selling floor. While coveted, the line was phased out.

The Glam Pad is curious to see what is in store for the new BR Home collection!

Camille Albertine

Occasionally, an item of pure beauty appears before your eyes that simply leaves you captivated. One such item came across my Instagram feed while scrolling one evening not long ago. A silk faille and Duchesse satin rose bouquet fashioned handbag leaped out at me. I was smitten and needed to know more.

Meet Camille Doyle, the creative mind behind Camille Albertine, handmade-to-order handbags. Having studied fashion design and fine arts in Montreal, Doyle has been crafting her own clothing and costumes for many years. Over time, she skillfully incorporated complementary bags to complete her ensembles. Eventually feeling compelled to showcase her creations to a wider audience, Doyle debuted Camille Albertine, a combination of her first name and her great-grandmother Albertine.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail in limited editions, her work epitomizes femininity and playfulness, crafted with meticulous attention to detail in limited editions. Drawing inspiration from the regal allure of royal wardrobes, the allure of theater costumes, the charm of vintage handmade bags, and the structural elegance of architecture, each piece exudes a unique and enchanting aura.

All pieces are crafted by Camille herself using silk faille and Duchesse satin. Take a look!

Remembering Jane Birkin, Mainly Baskets for Caitlin Wilson, and The Laundress Makes a Comeback

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we remember the iconic Jane Birkin, take a look at Mainly Baskets collection for Caitlin Wilson Design, and The Laundress’ return to the market. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Remembering Jane Birkin

The world has bid farewell to the beloved Jane Birkin, who gracefully passed away at the age of 76 on Sunday. Jane’s remarkable life is adorned with countless achievements, from her unforgettable musical collaborations with her long-time partner, an icon in his own right, Serge Gainsbourg, to her impressive acting prowess showcased both on stage and screen, and of course, her gamine presence and unique look.

It is undoubtedly within the realm of fashion that her illustrious legacy shines brightest. Hailing from London but embraced as a star in her adopted homeland of France, Jane Birkin has always been hailed as an unparalleled style icon. Her influence in the world of fashion remains unparalleled, and this is no small part due to the iconic Hermès bag that proudly bears her name.

As the story goes, in 1981 Birkin received an unexpected upgrade on her Air France flight and found herself seated next to none other than Jean-Louise Dumas, the esteemed Chief Executive of Hermès. In a scramble, the contents of Birkin’s purse, including her precious diary, accidentally spilled onto the floor. Dumas kindly offered a suggestion: perhaps a bag with pockets would be more fitting. She expressed that if Hermès were to craft a bag larger than the Kelly, spacious enough to house a woman’s essentials—she would gladly bid farewell to her signature oversized basket bag.

Dumas then pulled out a pencil and an airplane sick bag. Birkin quickly sketched her concept of the perfect handbag. This momentous creative endeavor would ultimately give birth to the timeless and iconic Birkin bag, which Hermès introduced to the world in 1984.

Jane Birkin’s elegant allure and effortless grace have enchanted generations, transcending time and inspiring fashion enthusiasts worldwide. Her unique blend of timeless sophistication and chic nonchalance led her to “it-girl” fame in the 1960s and she has since left an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, cementing her as a true icon for the ages. As we remember and celebrate her extraordinary life, Jane’s captivating fashion legacy will forever sparkle, guiding future generations of style aficionados with her eternal charm.

The Laundress Makes a Comeback

The Laundress triumphantly returns to the market after a six-month recall over bacteria concerns. As reported by Modern Retail, the revered Unilever-owned brand took swift action last fall, recalling its entire line of luxury cleaning products to address safety concerns related to elevated bacteria levels. The move garnered significant attention, with customers expressing their apprehension, and ultimately leading to the demise of the cult-favorite laundry line.

Now with a new manufacturer and improved formulas, they unveil a captivating collection, embracing pharmaceutical-grade production standards. This remarkable effort aims to win back trust, ensuring unmatched quality and safety for their cherished customers. Time to restock on their Wool & Cashmere Shampoo!

Asteroid City, Redd Kaihoi for Patterson Flynn, and A Dreamy English Abode

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City, Patterson Flynn’s latest collaboration with Redd Kaihoi, and a dreamy English Abode that has just hit the market. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Asteroid City

Renowned for his signature aesthetic, enchanting narratives, and idiosyncratic cast of characters, acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson possesses an unparalleled ability to whisk audiences away to meticulously crafted settings. Whether it’s the timeless allure of The Grand Budapest Hotel nestled in the fictional Republic of Zubrowka, the picturesque island village of Moonrise Kingdom set in charming New England, or the iconic scenes of The Royal Tenenbaums , Anderson’s cinematic backdrops never fail to captivate and delight.

Released on June 23rd, Anderson’s latest film Asteroid City has grabbed our attention. Set in a 1950s desert town, the captivating narrative revolves around Augie Steenbeck a widowed war photographer. Accompanied by his eldest son and enchanting triplet daughters, Augie embarks on a journey to the Junior Stargazer convention in the evocatively named Asteroid City.

With a visual style deeply rooted in Western Americana, the film works to capture the essence of this iconic era. And the sets, fabricated in Chinchón, Spain, have our design senses tingling. In classic Wes Anderson fashion, the vibrant colors, interiors, wardrobe, and every detail in between, is a feast for the eyes.

Let’s take a peek at some stills from the film!

A Dreamy English Abode Hits the Market

Transport yourself to a bygone era with this meticulously restored former village shop that has just hit the market. Standing proudly since 1720, the abode underwent a delightful transformation from 18th century storefront into a haven of cozy comfort for a cherished family. Beyond its inviting honey-colored façade, the echoes of history resonate in the preserved fireplaces and exposed wooden beams adorning the interior.

Like something out of a fairytale, the home exudes the warmth and charm of yesteryear with its preserved fireplaces and exposed wooden beams adorning the interior. Within a charming ragstone terrace, the dwelling has two exquisitely designed reception rooms, a generously-sized country kitchen, and two picture perfect bedrooms.

The home sits in Winterton, Lincolnshire, a historic English town that once witnessed the presence of Roman, Viking, and later Norman settlements. At the heart of it all stands the revered All Saints Church, constructed around 1080, following the Norman Conquest of England. This idyllic dwelling fulfills the dreams of those who have longed for a countryside haven straight from the cinematic landscapes of Nancy Meyers’ timeless films and we can’t get enough of it!

The World is Your Oyster: An Oyster Plate Deep Dive

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Oysters have long been regarded as a delicacy and a symbol of indulgence. Dating back centuries, these little gems have graced the tables of aristocrats, kings, and emperors alike. As the popularity of oysters soared during the 19th century, a captivating and sophisticated culinary companion made its grand entrance – enter the stage, the exquisite oyster plate!

Faïencerie de Lunéville-Saint-Clément

As the oyster became a  fashionable delicacy, bars, restaurants, and the most gracious of hosts realized the need for a specialized serving. Enter the oyster plate – a purpose-built dish designed to accommodate and showcase these exquisite shellfish.

Traditionally made from porcelain or ceramic, oyster plates are adorned with intricate designs that often reflect the prevailing artistic styles of the era. Early designs were often ornate, featuring complex patterns and gilded accents, reflecting the opulence of the time. As the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements gained prominence, oyster plates embraced a more streamlined and geometric aesthetic, with bold and modern designs.

Sotheby’s

The plates are also characterized by their unique shape and layout. Rather than a flat surface, oyster plates feature “wells” specifically designed to hold oysters. These wells are strategically positioned around the plate’s periphery, allowing for easy access but also creating an intriguing visual. These wells also shift in size regionally with oyster types and serving styles greatly varied throughout the world.

Brownfield Porcelain for Tiffany & Co

Today, oyster plates hold a special place in the world of antiques and decoration. As oyster plates have largely fallen out of favor for serving, they have become irresistible collectable pieces popping up all over the place! Antique oyster plates from the 19th and early 20th centuries in particular have become quite the collectibles commanding substantial prices for their rarity and unparalleled magnificence. Imbued with historical significance, each plate is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship and enduring beauty of a bygone era.
