The Winter Show

January 19th signals the kick-off of The Winter Show, celebrating its 70th year milestone. Originating in the 1950s as an philanthropic endeavor for the East Side House Settlement, The Winter Show evolved into the preeminent annual showcase of antiquities, decorative arts, and innovative design, proudly becoming the leading show of its kind in the United States. This extraordinary event is curated by globally renowned experts in the fine and decorative arts industries.

Set against the backdrop of the historic Park Avenue Armory, The Winter Show will run from January 19th to January 29th. Amidst this artistic extravaganza, the Armory will play host to captivating lectures and lively cocktail parties, with the much-anticipated Young Collectors Night taking center stage. This year’s edition of Young Collectors Night will pay tribute to the visionary creative director of Carolina Herrera, Wes Gordon, and the talented glass artist, Paul Arnhold. This event serves as a platform fostering the growth of New York’s emerging collectors and passionate enthusiasts in the world of art and design.

Style Profile: Kara Miller

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

A seasoned interior designer with a passion for design deeply rooted in her earliest memories, Kara Miller has us charmed with her beautiful and breezy interiors. Kara spent her childhood daydreaming over Southern Living house plans and admiring the wallpaper in her Nana’s cabana. Her journey into interior design was fueled by a keen awareness of her surroundings and a love for every nuance of home. Raised in Florida by southerners and enriched by summers in the Bahamas, Kara’s fusion of styles has shaped the approachable aesthetic The Glam Pad celebrates.

A graduate of Louisiana State University, Kara returned to South Florida to embark on her career in Interior Design. She found her calling by transitioning into designing for General Contractors and hasn’t looked back since. Kara’s passion lies in understanding her clients’ aspirations for their living spaces, translating those desires into tangible backdrops where life’s precious moments unfold. Beyond her design expertise, Kara also holds an active real estate license and resides in Jupiter with her family. Join us as we delve into Kara’s tropical paradise and explore her design philosophy…

Welcome, Kara!

Q: When and how did you first become interested in interior design?

A: I have always loved architecture and design from a very young age. When my friends were getting YM and Bop at the grocery checkout counter, I was begging my mother for Southern Living House Plans printed in black and white. My family on both sides are all creative.

My grandmothers, my aunts and my mother were particularly gracious homemakers and hostesses. They all loved to design warm and inviting homes for our family and so from a very young age I was surrounded by and raised in very loving and beautiful environments.

Q: What are some style/design elements that you think are distinct or signature to your decorating style?

A: I love blending a mix of design elements to create fresh, but cozy spaces. Textures, great millwork details, colors and patterns are all given careful thought. I am very intentional about transitions between spaces, and I love establishing a rhythm throughout any project with these components.

Q: How do you describe your personal style and where do you find inspiration?

A: I would say my personal style is an eclectic mix. I love to blend old with new and always incorporate a dash of sentimentality. Family and roots are incredibly important to me. As cliché as it sounds, I find a lot of inspiration in nature for color palettes. We live by the ocean and I also spend a lot of time in the low country so the outdoors provide and endless amount of ideas.

Q: Do you have any favorite go-to paints, wallpapers, linens, artists, etc.?

A: Yes! Paint is usually very specific to a fabric or wallcovering, but some of my favorite colors are Ben Moore Simply White and Colony Green. I also love Farrow and Ball Pink Ground and Sherwin Williams Honest Blue. I love Phillip Jeffries and Thibaut for textures, Quadrille, Farrow and Ball, Soane Britain and Raoul Textiles for patterns, to name only a few.

Q: Where do you enjoy sourcing antiques and art?

A: I love sourcing older pieces! There are many great antique stores here in Palm Beach county that are a lot of fun to shop. I do love Palm Beach Regency and Palm Beach Home Style, as well as Chairish, First Dibs and etsy.

Q: What has been the most challenging (and the most rewarding) part of developing your business?

A: Great question! The most challenging has been learning to establish a healthy work/life balance for sure. I am so passionate about what I do and give so much to my projects that I have to remember to balance that with other areas of my life. It’s easier said than done when it’s your name on the door, but it’s something I have been very intentional about over the last year.

The most rewarding is definitely the relationships built with our clients. I have always wanted to maintain a boutique feel at KMI and so we intentionally keep our roster on the smaller side so everyone gets our best creatively and from a service perspective. We specialize in full service design so our projects are usually one to three years in length.

These are long term relationships that are very important and dear to me. I take my role very seriously and never take the trust that clients give us lightly. It is so rewarding to be involved in creating homes for families. I cannot think of anything else I would rather do. It’s the heartbeat of my career.

Q: What are your tips for setting a lovely table?

A: Beautiful linens, candlelight and fresh flowers – often times cut from the yard! You do not need to spend a lot to get beautiful bouquets. I actually think a collection from out back is more interesting.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: Reading, going to the beach, hiking, yoga, cooking for my loved ones and enjoying a great SEC game day at home with my family.

Q: What is your favorite design or coffee table book?

A: Island Whimsy by Celerie Kemble. I am driven by possibility and creativity so I find this story irresistible.

Paris Déco Off, The Dexter-Cummings Estate, and Sarah Bray Bermuda Pop-Ups

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at the up coming Paris Déco Off, The Dexter-Cummings Estate, and Sarah Bray Bermuda Pop-Ups. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Paris Déco Off 2024

Paris Déco Off, often referred to as the “fashion week for the interiors industry,” is set to commence on January 17th. Annually, a convergence of interior designers, decorative arts media, industry craftsmen, vendors, and design enthusiasts takes place in Paris for a five-day spectacular, attracting over 40,000 global visitors to this esteemed event.

Approximately 120 thoughtfully curated showrooms and artisans will unveil their latest collections, presenting exquisite fabrics, wallpapers, trimmings, wall coverings, and more. Anticipated as an unparalleled extravaganza, this year is poised to deliver over-the-top presentations and soirées fueled by pent-up excitement and a longing for travel.

To illuminate the way, the iconic Déco Off lanterns will once again grace the main promenades on both the left and right banks, casting an enchanting glow throughout the event. Each lantern features a unique print from a participating fabric house, serving as both a guiding light and a testament to the event’s artistic essence. Save the date for this year’s Déco Off, happening from January 17th to the 21st.

The Dexter Cummings Estate

Nestled in the historic Lake Forest, IL, The Dexter-Cummings Estate, a masterpiece designed by the often overlooked but brilliant Harrie T. Lindeberg in 1929, has captured our hearts. This stately and richly storied home was originally commissioned for Dexter Cummings, a distinguished attorney and accomplished golfer, winning the intercollegiate championship twice in the 1920s. Dexter shared this grand residence with his wife, Edith Cummings Munson, fondly known as The Fairway Flapper. Edith not only held a prominent role as an American socialite but also as a leading amateur golfer during the Jazz Age.

Recognized as one of the Big Four debutantes in Chicago during World War I, Edith gained national acclaim in 1923 after triumphing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. In a historic moment on August 25, 1924, she became the first golfer and female athlete to grace the cover of Time magazine. Beyond her sporting prowess, Edith’s life and character inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s creation of Jordan Baker in the classic novel, The Great Gatsby.

This iconic Lake Forest estate embodies the charm of a French Manor home, nestled on two private acres along the sought-after Lake Road. Meticulously restored with the otmost attention to detail, this exceptional and historic property exudes timeless elegance of a bygone era.

The commanding brick wall enveloping the main house gracefully unveils a rectangular courtyard, while the towering hipped roof—a distinctive hallmark of the esteemed architect who, in 1927, also designed the Onwentsia Club—bestows a profound sense of architectural grandeur. Positioned at the southwest corner of the 11-acre estate known as Ioka, originally owned by Dexter Cummings’ father, D. Mark Cummings, this residence is slice of fascinating American history. And while its original decor does not remain, its splendor certainly does. Let’s have a look!

Sarah Bray Bermuda Pop-Ups

Founded by the ever chic writer and stylist, Sarah Bray-West, in the midst of the pandemic, Sarah Bray Bermuda came to life offering the most darling of sun hats. Crafted from sea grass and palm leaf, these hats boast vintage floral and made-in-USA grosgrain ribbons, adding a perfect touch of charm to each hat.

These sun hats have quickly become a beloved accessory for sunny days. To mark the special occasion of Lee Jofa’s 200th Anniversary, Sarah Bray Bermuda partnered with the esteemed fabric house for an exclusive collection featuring ribbons crafted from their iconic textiles. Although warm weather might feel like a distant dream, it’s never too early to plan for that upcoming vacation. In line with this, Sarah Bray-West is gearing up for her grand tour this winter, with pop-up events scheduled around Florida and Georgia. Check the dates and location below!

Real Estate Round Up: A Turn of The Century Gem, Turville Grange, and Denham Place

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at some of our favorite homes on the market for an end of the year real estate round up! Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Hotze House: A Turn of The Century Gem

A timeless turn-of-the-century gem known as the Hotze House has hit the market in Little Rock. Constructed in 1900 by Charles L Thompson, a highly prolific architect who created one of the most successful architectural practices in Arkansas, this property stands as a captivating gem waiting to be revitalized. Notably, the stained glasswork and interior finishes were meticulously curated by the esteemed Tiffany’s of New York, adding extra allure and historical significance.

With a sprawling footprint, the house has been impeccably maintained over the years, poised for a creative individual to restore it to its original splendor. Each room tells a story of timeless elegance with its numerous grand fireplaces, stately tall ceilings, and handcrafted millwork. The charm exuding from every corner creates a captivating ambiance, inviting a restoration that honors its rich heritage.

Attempting to capture the beauty and history of this home is a challenge. This distinguished property stands not just as a home but as a living testament to Little Rock’s architectural heritage, something sadly forgotten in much of our country. Seamlessly blending sophistication with functionality in every intricate detail, we hope to see the legacy of this remarkable residence carried on. Boasting 8,339 square feet, this is a lot of home for the price – $1.45M. Let’s take a look inside!

Turville Grange

Step inside Turville Grange, a mid-18th century gem nestled in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire with a storied past. This property seamlessly blends history and modern luxury, meticulously refurbished and now on the market for £12.7 million pounds. Its intriguing historical lineage dates back to 1700, with the main structure erected in 1887. Acquired by the Marquis and Marquise d’Hautpoul de Seyre, close confidantes of Prince George and Princess Mary of Teck, the estate frequently hosted the royal pair. Queen Alexandra added a lasting touch – a wrought-iron replica of the gates of Sandringham, still standing on the property today.

In the 1950s, the home was purchased by Lord and Lady Esher, the latter an American steel heiress. Their son, the acclaimed architect Lionel Brett, took the reins and redefined the house in the elegant Georgian style. With the addition of a front-door surround, dormer windows, and a Tuscan-columned loggia, Lionel Brett’s touch added a timeless quality that fit the existing home perfectly.

In 1966, society swan and then princess, Lee Radziwill, Jackie Kennedy’s sister, purchased the estate with her second husband Prince Stanislaw. The esteemed interior designer Renzo Mongiardino and Princess Radziwill infused the property with her unique style bringing the home into a new era. The guest house even received a playful rename, “The White House,” in homage to her sister and brother-in-law. The estate went on to be featured in Architectural Digest and Vogue and even played host to guests like Princess Margaret, Aristotle Onassis, Harold Macmillan, and Sean Connery. Post the Radziwills’ era, Henry Ford II and Kathleen DuRoss Ford acquired the property, ushering in a new chapter with a design refresh by none other than Colefax & Fowler. Let’s have a look!

Denham Place

Nestled in Denham village, where London and Buckinghamshire meet, Denham Place emerges as a storied gem, echoing tales of grandeur dating back to 1688. This Grade I Listed mansion, sprawled across nearly 43 acres of meticulously landscaped land envisioned by the legendary Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, is a testament to timeless elegance and English heritage. In a noteworthy turn of events, the illustrious property is now poised for a rare sale, with the current owner, business tycoon Mike Jatania, parting ways with this opulent estate.

This historic manor, crafted in the William and Mary architectural style, underwent a meticulous eight-year restoration under the discerning eye of acclaimed designer Alexander Kravetz. The residence pays homage to historical accuracy, with ornate plasterwork, lofty sash windows, and stately rooms steeped in history. The corridors of Denham Place echo with tales of its notable former residents, including the Bonaparte Imperial family, JP Morgan, Lord Robert Vansittart, and James Bond film co-producer Harry Saltzman. For a astounding price tag of £75 million pounds. Let’s take a look at the opulent Denham Place!

Classic Christmas Moments with Beth Helmstetter

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Meet Beth Helmstetter, a visionary with an unwavering commitment to creating meaningful experiences. Over the past two decades, Beth has honed the art of design, turning everyday moments into timeless memories through her eponymous firm. With services ranging from holiday design and styling to full-scale event design with seamless production and beyond, Beth is a master of human connection.

In a world where aesthetics often take center stage, her philosophy is built on the belief that every element, every detail, has the power to foster a profound sense of togetherness. Beth’s touch is unmistakable – a blend of artistry, functionality, and an unwavering dedication to the experience. It’s not merely about creating a visually stunning environment; it’s about crafting a narrative where every element contributes to a seamless and unforgettable story.

With Christmas Eve upon us, Beth is giving us an inside look into some of her classic Christmas moments she has so tastefully constructed and her ethos behind them.

“When it comes to decorating your home for the holidays, sophistication lies in the natural beauty of the season. Embrace the ‘less is more’ ethos by harmonizing your décor with a single element that’s carried throughout your home. In this homage to the ‘Classic Christmas’ style, the integration of fresh garlands, pine cones, and delicate berries is that timeless, unifying thread. These natural elements can be intentionally placed throughout your home, from staircases to mantelpieces, wreaths, the recesses of your china cabinet, adorning tablescapes, and even gracing your bookshelves.

If you’re pressed for time, never underestimate the impact of a simple pillow swap to infuse that festive spirit. Opt for a deep-hued red or green velvet to effortlessly elevate your aesthetic. You can extend this theme throughout your home as well, adding plush velvet ribbons for accents to staircases, Christmas trees, candelabras and sconces, and place settings so that every part of your home feels warm and cheerful. “

Thank you Beth for giving us an inside look into your classic Christmas world and sharing your insightful prose on the art of decoration.

A Magical Christmas Affair: Celebrating with The Enchanted Home

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Step into the sublime world of Tina from The Enchanted Home as she graciously invites us into her new home, offering an exclusive glimpse into her Christmas wonderland, along with a recap from her former home. We have followed Tina since she began building her magnificent custom dream home over a decade ago. This year a new chapter begins for her family as they have moved to a beautiful historic home on the north shore of Long Island.

Built in 1913, Tina had long admired this house from afar.  “My husband used to say he would love to buy a house on the water, and I would half-jokingly say the only way I would move is if that house came on the market (the one we bought),” she said. “Sure enough a few years later, it comes on the market, we went to look at it more just because we wanted to see it and I kind of fell in love.”
The gracious, elegant home was meticulously maintained like a rare jewel by a woman who raised her family and lived in the home for the last 60 years. Being on the water was a huge perk. Greenhouse, another perk. Pool and tennis double the fun. When Tina first walked in, she knew they had to buy it as it embodied everything she loves.

“It just felt like a perfect family compound, and while it’s a large home, it’s not the huge scale of my other house. It feels elegant, old world, grand in a cozy way,” Tina said. “I have always admired beautiful big white houses with black shutters and now I live in one!”

With new surroundings to explore, Tina chose a traditional Christmas look, embracing the timeless allure of classic blue and white peppered with festive pops of red. Set against the lush backdrop of fresh greens, the result is a magical celebration that is undeniably merry and truly enchanting…

To establish an elegant and festive ambiance, Tina adorned the door frame with lush cedar and filled her planters with a blend of fresh greens and faux berries creating an enchanting “Merry Christmas” welcome. Upon entering the foyer, attention is drawn to a majestic Christmas tree. Standing tall and resplendently adorned in timeless blue and white ornaments accentuated by charming red bows, it sets the tone for the rest of the home.

In every corner of Tina’s home, she has skillfully mixed fresh greenery, lovely flowers, and gorgeous ornaments, crafting an effortlessly harmonious scheme throughout. Wherever you cast your gaze, there are pockets of pure Christmas magic—perfect for hosting and entertaining.
