Gorgeously Grandmillennial with J. Kathryn Interiors

One of our favorite things at The Glam Pad is discovering new-to-us designers who fill us with inspiration and joy. We first “met” Jessica Kain Barton of J. Kathryn Interiors when her scrumptious lower lounge for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2023 Southeastern Designer Showhouse and Gardens was unveiled. A celebration of traditional style, with a generous dose of Grandmillennial flaire, Jessica looked to design legends such as Mario Buatta, Bunny Mellon, and Deeda Blair for inspiration. We were head over heels!

Having grown up in Kentucky, Jessica adores exquisitely layered interiors that are rooted in tradition, infused with playful whimsey, and designed for entertaining. She also has a keen eye for detail, which can be seen throughout every inch of this space from the sumptuous trims and passementerie to the skillfully hand-painted ceiling. Let’s take a look inside with photography by Robert Peterson of Rustic White Interiors and styling by Frances Bailey.

You can read more about this gorgeous room through a delightful interview Jessica conducted with Samuel & Sons. To see more of her work, please visit J. Kathryn Interiors and follow @jkathryninteriors on Instagram. And stay tuned, as The Glam Pad will be featuring much more of her work! 🙂

Now, in a splendid collaboration, Nickey Kehoe has joined forces with Cabana to unveil a captivating accessories collection. The inspiration for this collection sprang to life during a recent voyage to the South of France where the pair uncovered a treasure trove of turn-of-the-century hand-blocked prints. The culmination of their discovery is a trio of delightful items: a luxurious cashmere pillow, an opulent cashmere throw, and an exquisite lacquer tray.

London Living: Town and Country

2

Released by Vendome this fall, London Living: Town and Country presents a unique look into the homes of London-based interior designers, antique dealers, musicians, and influencers, revealed by leading interior design photographer Simon Upton.

Following the success of his first book, New York Interiors, Simon Upton turns to London—a city in which he has been based for most of his working life. Exploring an incredible range of homes in this vibrant city, Upton looks behind the scenes into the private spaces of creatives and influencers.

London Living: Town and Country

Presented in two parts, the book begins with “Town,” which is devoted to the homes of those who live solely in London, such as grandee of interior design John Stefanidis; House & Garden’s Interior Designer of the Year 2019, Maria Speake; industrial designer and architect Tom Bartlett; fashion designer Bella Freud; model Poppy Delevingne; and antiques dealer and interior designer Adam Bray.

Then, “Country” showcases those who divide their time between London and a retreat in the British countryside, which includes names such as antiques dealers Jorge Perez-Martin and David Gibson, known together as Brownrigg; film director Gaby Dellal; and designer Jasper Conran.

Edited by interior design writer Karen Howes and featuring a foreword by iconic decorator and Upton’s friend Nicky Haslam, London Living reveals a series of unique locations, each illuminated by an interview in which the owner defines their true meaning of “home.”

Such a beautiful and inspirational book to add to your library! London Living: Town and Country is available for purchase through Amazon.

In response to this challenge, Patrick Frey, the son of founder Pierre Frey and the eponymous company’s creative director, has unveiled an expansive compendium of inspiration, drawing from their extensive archive of over 25,000 documents. Aptly titled Pierre Frey: Textiles, Wallpapers, Carpets, and Furniture, this book stands as an essential reference and a font of inspiration for designers.

Style Profile: Sean Symington Interior Design

Earlier this month, The Glam Pad featured the most charming Cotswold cottage decorated by up-and-coming interior designer, Sean Symington. Back by popular request, we are delighted to welcome Sean today and get to know him better with a peek through his exquisite portfolio and a Q&A!

Sean Symington began his career in Toronto, completing a Bachelor of Arts from Ryerson University, School of Interior Design. Following his education, he worked for top interior design firms in both the UK and North America. With experience in residential, hospitality and commercial interior design, Sean is well-versed in the design and construction process. With this knowledge as the foundation, he has been a tutor at the British Academy of Interior Design for several years, alongside building his practice. From concept to completion, Sean Symington Interior Design offers an array of services ranging from extensive remodelling and construction to light-touch styling and home staging. Sean endeavours to keep his firm small and boutique, always ensuring that the client is at the forefront of every project.

Welcome, Sean!

Sean Symington

Q:  When did you decide to pursue a career in interior design, and what was your biggest influence along the way?

A:  I always knew I wanted to be an interior designer. My passion for interior designer was always prevalent, from a very early age I would rearrange my childhood bedroom and insist on parading my family around while I pointed out how the new layout was so much better than the previous. Following this, during high school I pursued a job with a residential developer in Toronto, where I assisted new homebuyers with selecting the finishes for their new home. When it came time to apply for universities, I knew I wanted to make my passion a career. For this reason, I enrolled at Toronto Metropolitan University, where I obtained a BA in interior design. Throughout my life, I’ve been influenced by various design luminaries, including historical figures like David Hicks and Dorothy Draper, as well as contemporary designers such as Mark D Sikes and Miles Redd. These influences continue to fuel my creativity and drive. I am thrilled to embark on the path of growth as a designer and to further expand my portfolio of work.

Q:  What made you decide to move from Canada to England? What is your favorite thing about living/working across the pond?

A:  After completing my university education, I embarked on my career journey by joining an interior design firm in Toronto, Canada. It was there that I found myself immersed in a unique project known as “Versailles in The Sky,” which was an apartment within the Four Seasons that aimed to replicate the grandeur of the Palace of Versailles. While meticulously sketching the ornate mouldings onto the elevations, I couldn’t help but feel a touch of impostor syndrome, given that I had never personally visited Versailles.

My desire to both explore Europe and advance in my career was a driving force within me. Consequently, I decided to apply for positions with design firms in Chelsea, London. Initially, I envisioned it as a two-year adventure, but it ultimately transformed into a wholehearted relocation across the Atlantic. Living in England captivated me, and I developed a profound affinity for the design landscape here, which starkly contrasted with Toronto. The richness of layered interiors, bold use of colour, and the prevalence of antique elements perfectly resonated with my personal aesthetic.

One of the many aspects I adore about this newfound home is its proximity to European cities. Whether it’s a weekend getaway to Amsterdam or a day trip to Paris, the accessibility to these iconic destinations is simply unparalleled.

Q:  How do you define your style?

A:  I would define my style as a fresh take on traditional. I like classic interiors with a fresh whimsy. I think every room should strike the right balance of colour and pattern with eclectic pieces which reflect the people who live there. I don’t like interiors that look like a ‘one-stop shop’ or catalogue furniture. Incorporating antiques and vintage is always a must.

Q:  Who are your top five interior designers (past/present)?

A:  There are so many interior designers that I admire. It is very hard to narrow it down, but if I had to put a mini list together, it would be the below:

  • Bunny Williams
  • Ben Pentreath
  • Nicholas Haslam
  • Mary McDonald
  • Mark D Sikes

Q:  Do you have any favorite go-to paints, wallpapers, linens, artists, etc.?

A:  We use so many different suppliers in our projects that it is very hard to narrow down our favorites. I would say Edward Bulmer for paint, Schumacher for fabrics and Cricket Fine Art for fab oils! It is all about striking the right balance between English traditional with fresh joyful colour and whimsy.

Q:  For those of us who live in the U.S. but adore English Style, what are your tips for achieving this timeless and quintessential look?

A:  I think the classic English Style is all about the mix so my advice would be to start collecting items that you are drawn to. I am a strong believer that if you love something, it will always work in a room. Don’t take decorating too seriously and have fun with it. Lastly, every room needs something old, whether it be a beautiful old chest of drawers or a midcentury rattan side table, something with a bit of wear-and-tear is must in every room to avoid it looking too perfect.

Q:  What are your favorite Instagram accounts to follow?

A:  There are so many fabulous Instagram accounts to follow. I love following @vsp_interiors as her style is so chic and fab! Similarly, across the pond, I love following @heatherchadduck ‘s work in America.

Q:  Where do you see Sean Symington Interiors in the next five years?

A:  I am very much in the growing stage of my business. We are working on some exciting projects currently that I hope will take us to the next step in the industry. I would love more international projects and maybe even a boutique hotel! Let’s see where we end up… I am always a dreamer.

Q:  When you aren’t busy decorating, how do you enjoy spending your free time?

A:  At this point in my career, I have very little free time! I am so busy working on the various projects I have on the go. However, when I can take time off (which is never) I love traveling, perusing antique markets and delicious wine with good friends!

Thank you so much, Sean, for joining us today! We are huge fans of your work and cannot wait to watch your career skyrocket!

With an international perspective influenced by her architect brother David Adler and an incredible circle of luminaries such as interior designer Jean-Michel Frank, couturière Coco Chanel, and painter Salvador Dali, she brought modern European sensibility to traditional design principles.

Q: When and how did you first become interested in architectural design?

A: I’ve always had an appreciation for architecture; however, this was expounded during my high school years as I traveled to Europe three times with my language group. During those adventures, I was exposed to incredible architectural wonders such as the Sistine Chapel, the Louvre, and the Alhambra.

Initially, I was a Fine Arts major at the University of Colorado Boulder, where at the time, an architecture program did not exist. I then switched to the Interior Design program. I have a very strong mathematical mind and an innate ability to visualize three dimensionally. As I evolved through the Interior Design program, I became more and more intrigued by the concept of creating and composing intricate 3D elements, which led me to join the architectural program at the University of Maryland College Park.

Q: How and when did you come to start your own firm?

A: I started my firm in 1995 out of a 1,000 square foot home. I fundamentally knew I would someday start my own firm. While I had been approached by principals of other firms to come onboard with a partnership, I felt strongly about running my own team.

Q: What are some design elements that you think are distinct or signature to your approach?

A: I think we are best known for our work on view-oriented properties, multi-structure estates, and for our expertise across a range of architectural vernaculars and interior design styles. Our approach results in designs that create emotional connections to the surrounding environment, and floor plans that are not only beautiful, but highly functional.

Q: Who are your top five architectural and or interior designers (past/present) you turn to for inspiration?

A: Anouska Hempel. She infuses old with new, excels at bringing the outside in, and creates settings that feel very ethereal. I love the compositions that she puts together.

McKim, Mead & White. Their work truly stands the test of time.

I’m inspired by old buildings in old cities throughout Greece, Japan, and Scandinavia. I’m drawn to that historic simplicity.

I admire the work of Bunny Williams – it is classical, comfortable, layered, and very successfully blends different aesthetics.

When I was younger, I loved and admired the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Q: How has your design philosophy evolved over your career?

A: As I’ve gotten older, and as I’ve had the great honor of being exposed to more and more large-scale projects, my design philosophy has been influenced by just how significant millwork, the layering of accessories, and landscaping are to help create the most magnificent outcome. I’ve come to really respect what a landscape architect brings to a project and to value the importance of integrating artwork, sculpture, accessories, and millwork into a home.

Q: Define your style in three words.

A: Classical. First and foremost, I am a classical designer, however I love layering elements of bohemian or maximalist aesthetics to a project to bring vibrancy into otherwise very stately settings.

Clean. I like very clean elements with very bold pops of color. Southwestern adobe feeling.

Rustic. I love rusticism transfused into modernism, transitional with mountain home elements. This influence stems from my time going to school in Colorado.

Q: What advice do you have for women thinking of launching their own business?

A: Make sure that you surround yourself with other intelligent, strong work ethic, energetic women. They become an extension of you and will help you to successfully grow your company. Have a life partner who is supportive in all other aspects of your home life and child rearing because as a female business owner, we cannot do it all and we need to recognize that. We need to build our team, and the most significant team member is the life partner. Don’t be afraid. Owning a business is a roller coaster and you have to just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Q: What are five everyday luxuries you could not live without?

A: Getting to collaborate every day in the creative world, a hot bath with great salts, beautiful art, Zoom meetings, seeing or speaking with my children.

Q: Any fun facts people don’t know about you?

A: People think of me as traditional, but I am really bohemian. My favorite meal is pancakes with bacon and lots of syrup. My bucket list includes visiting a monastery perched onto the side of a cliff.

Q: What are you currently working on that we can look forward to in the coming months?

A: Fortunately, we are incredibly busy. We have a number of stunning, highly detailed homes and multi-structure estates being built at the moment. I am so looking forward to having them photographed and to sharing them with our followers and with the press. We also continue to grow our team as well as our geographic reach. We are currently working on projects across the country – in addition to work throughout the Mid-Atlantic, we currently have projects in Massachusetts, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio, and Nebraska, to name a few.

In addition, we will open a new office in Manhattan later this year and will publish a book in Summer 2024 about a waterfront multi-structure compound for which we were responsible for both architecture and interior design. We are so fortunate to have each of these opportunities!

With a career spanning over 50 years, the Egyptian-born and Oxford-educated Stefanidis is a legend in his own right and continues to be one of the world’s most sought-after designers.

Compiling five decades of work, his eagerly anticipated monograph, John Stefanidis: A Designer’s Eye, showcases how he has drawn inspiration from a diverse global array of influences for his interiors, furniture, and fabric collections. Established in Chelsea, London, in 1967, Stefanidis’ design practice has attracted a discerning international clientele, known for his thoughtful, vibrant, and beautiful homes around the globe.

If there’s a signature “Stefanidis look,” it combines an original use of vibrant colors, an eclectic aesthetic, a keen sense of proportions, and comfort paired with international sophistication. His interiors often feature custom elements like bronze door pulls, oak shutters, inlaid tables, or artisanal work such as wood marbling and floor mosaics. This lavishly illustrated retrospective, including images from prominent shelter magazines and unpublished photos from the designer’s archive, traces Stefanidis’s journey from his beginnings in the late 1960s to his most recent celebrated projects. We couldn’t be more excited to explore this book!
