Style Profile: Katie Davis Design

Katie Davis developed an appreciation for design at a young age when her family undertook a major remodel of their home. She observed her mom and an interior designer work together to develop, coordinate, and implement a shared vision for her family’s home—an imaginative and collaborative process that still resonates with her today. And so began her love affair with beautiful spaces and quality furniture, fabrics, and materials.

Life, however, took Katie in a different direction. Upon graduating from the University of Texas, she went on to attend law school. During her years as a practicing attorney, design remained a favorite hobby until she fully embraced her true passion, launching Katie Davis Design in 2018. Let’s take a peek inside her incredible portfolio…

Q:  When and how did you first become interested in interior design?

A:  I was always interested in design. My mom worked with a designer on my childhood home growing up so I was exposed to that world early on. I fell in love with it.

Q:  Tell us a bit about your career path. Did you take a traditional path to becoming an interior designer?

A:  My path to become an interior designer was a non-traditional one. I actually went to law school, and was a practicing attorney until 2019. Design was my side hustle. I was the person my friends would ask for wallpaper advice, or renovation help. And finally, a few years ago I took the leap. I began helping out friends, then friends of friends, and starting building an Instagram audience. Now, I have a team of 8 women, with projects across the country. It’s a dream come true!

Q:  How do you define your style?

A:  I would define my style as traditional with modern touches (aka Grandmillenial). I am forever inspired by the Cotswolds, so there’s definitely English cottage vibes throughout our portfolio. We embrace color, pattern and femininity, and our projects always include a whimsical wallcovering or textile.

Q:  What designers inspire you?

A:  I am always inspired by Bunny Williams, Mark Sikes, Marie Flanigan, and lately I’ve been loving Sarah Bartholemew and her new fabric line.

Q:  What are 5 everyday luxuries you could not live without?

A:  1. A good candle – I have an Amazon subscription to my favorite scent.
2. Sunday Riley’s CEO vitamin c serum – my face feels instantly brighter when I put this on in the morning
3. Grocery delivery
4. My beautiful heirloom quilt – I bought one years ago from Courtney Barton in Houston, and I’m in love.
5. The 30 minutes I have to myself after the kids leave for school

Q:  What are your goals for Katie Davis Design over the next five years?

A:  Our goal is to keep making beautiful spaces and products, and keep working with creative clients that love to collaborate. And maybe a custom furniture piece or two.

Q:  What are you currently working on that we can look forward to in the coming months?

A:  We are about to finish some special new construction projects with different sources of inspiration –expect English Cotswolds vibes, a modern take on a French style in Louisiana, a cozy mountain house in Colorado… Lots of pretty spaces to look forward to.

Q:  Any fun facts people don’t know about you?

A:  That I used to be an attorney!

Q:  What are your favorite China and silver patterns?

A:  I have had the Bernardaud Constance pattern forever. I recently began collecting the Richard Ginori Oriente Italiano collection, starting with the green dinner plates and blue salad plates.

Q:  What advice do you have for women thinking of launching their own business?

A:  My advice is to ask a lot of questions, find a good mentor, and make sure you enjoy the business side because you’ll do a lot of that. Most importantly: Go for it!

The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection, Joie by Ajiri Aki, and Karl Lagerfeld

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection auction at Christie’s, Joie by Ajiri Aki, and The Costume Institute’s Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

The Ann and Gordon Getty Collection: Temple of Wings

Last July, The Glam Pad reported on the passing of renowned decorator, philanthropist, and socialite, Ann Getty, and the Christie’s auction that followed in Autumn of 2022. One year later, Christie’s brings us the next installment of the Ann and Gordon Getty estate with a three part auction entitled Temple of Wings.

Christie’s, Temple of Wings

This extraordinary auction series pays homage to the visionary couple’s awe-inspiring transformation of their historic Berkeley Hills estate, once the cherished residence of Florence Treadwell Boynton in a magnificent Greco-Roman style.

Christie’s, Temple of Wings

In 1994, the Gettys acquired the magnificent Temple of Wings, a true gem that became a canvas of artistic expression under the devoted care of Ann Getty. With a keen eye for the exquisite, Ann adorned the residence with a curated collection of decorative arts and furniture that beautifully encapsulated the eclecticism of European and American design from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Christie’s, Temple of Wings

The home became an extraordinary collage of Arts and Crafts, Classical Revival, Aesthetic, and Art Nouveau movements, featuring countless works of William Morris, Tiffany Studios, Art Pottery, and much more. Marking a once in a life time opportunity, the auction of Temple of Wings effects will begin on May 31 with a two part online sale running until June 15th. The greatly anticipated live auction will take place in New York on June 15h. More information on the sale and all lots can be found here.

Let’s take a peek at the auction highlights!

Joie: A Parisian’s Guide to Celebrating the Good Life

Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

Step into the captivating world of Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, an enchanting exhibition that will transport you into the timeless allure of Lagerfeld’s extraordinary legacy. Unveiled on May 5th, right after the grandeur of the Met Gala, this spring 2023 showcase, curated by The Costume Institute, pays homage to the iconic visionary himself, Karl Lagerfeld (1933–2019).

Focusing on aesthetic themes, the exhibition works to divorce the artist from the art, capturing the essence of his artistic genius that reverberates throughout the decades, from the dazzling 1950s to his final opus in 2019, rather than just the icon known to all.

Each exquisite fashion piece on display, a meticulously curated selection of around 150 garments, becomes a portal to Lagerfeld’s visionary world. These garments are accompanied by Lagerfeld’s sketches, offering a glimpse into the inner workings of his complex creative process. These sketches not only unveil the secrets behind his designs but also shine a spotlight on the profound collaborative relationships he cultivated with his esteemed premières, the head seamstresses who brought his visions to life.

Lagerfeld’s artistic prowess transcended boundaries as his fluid lines seamlessly intertwined the realms of Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld. His spellbinding and prolific body of work stands as an indomitable testament to his creative genius, unparalleled in the annals of fashion history. The show is on now at The Met and will run until July 16th. If you cannot make it to The Met, we adore this exhibition tour with curator Andrew Bolton!

The Elegant Resurgence of Biedermeier Furniture

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Emerging originally from Vienna and inspired by earlier Empire and Director styles, Biedermeier furniture reigned supreme from 1815 to 1848.  As the chaos of the Napoleonic wars subsided, a new era of peace and prosperity emerged along with a desire for a new style of furniture, one that would reflect the values of the times… Enter the Biedermeier movement, a style that embodied the spirit of the European bourgeoisie and their aspirations for a comfortable and refined lifestyle.

Woman Embroidering, Biedermeier-style painting by Georg Friedrich Kersting, oil on canvas, c. 1814; in the Kunstsammlungen, Weimar, Germany

At its core, Biedermeier furniture was all about simplicity and functionality. A style following the philosophy of elegance meeting simplicity, clean lines, and graceful curves. The ornate and lavish designs of the past were fussy, albeit beautiful, leading to the desire to be replaced by sleek and minimalistic forms. The wood was the star of the show, with its natural beauty and grain patterns highlighted through the use of soft, warm colors.

Josef Ulrich Danhauser, Danhauser Furniture Factory

The Biedermeier furniture makers were masters of their craft, blending traditional techniques with new technologies to create pieces that were both beautiful and functional. Chairs were designed with comfortable backrests and seats, tables were made with extendable leaves, and cabinets were built with ample storage space.

Wohnzimmer des Schlossermeisters, Hauschild in Berlin

The popularity of Biedermeier furniture quickly spread across Europe, becoming the go-to style for the middle and upper classes. Its influence could be seen in the grand palaces of Vienna and the charming cottages of the countryside.

As time passed, the Biedermeier movement gradually faded into obscurity, replaced by new styles and trends. The ever-shifting tides of fashion and the emergence of avant-garde movements forced the once-beloved Biedermeier movement struggled to keep up with the bold strokes of a new era. Its elegant and understated lines gradually became overshadowed by more flamboyant and experimental designs. The demise of the Biedermeier furniture was not a sudden cataclysm, but a slow descent as new trends marched on.

Anne Wagoner Interiors

Today, its resurgence makes perfect sense. As younger generations begin to create homes of their own and gravitate towards furniture pieces of quality, the ethos and style of Biedermeier blend seamlessly into modernity. It is elegant yet accessible with its use of clean curves, glossy finishes, and geometric bones superbly toeing the line between masculine and feminine.

Colorful, Classic Style by Edith-Anne Duncan

For those of us who love old homes but for one reason or another cannot find the right one, today’s home tour is an excellent example of how newer construction can be given a makeover inspired by the past. Enter designer Edith-Anne Duncan, her clients, and their circa 2008 Blacksburg, Virginia home. The couple’s last home had been a 1930s Tudor loaded with historic character, and they wanted their new home to be infused with an “aged-over-time” charm. “They wanted to give it bones and character—and I said, ‘I can do that!’” Duncan told Southern Home magazine.

Dated columns were removed, floors were stained, canned lights were eliminated, knobs and fixtures were replaced, and elegant trim and millwork was added. A pantry was relocated to connect the dining room with the kitchen (which was completely renovated), bathrooms were all renovated, and a sunroom/reading room was added on. Beautiful wallpapers add color and texture such as the Schumacher scenic paper in the dining room with Phillip Jeffries grasscloth ceiling. Bold paint colors and accents throughout add a touch of whimsy to the classic design.

Let’s take a look inside with photography by Dustin Peck.

Such a gorgeous home, we cannot get enough of the fabulous color and charm! For a glimpse behind the scenes of this remarkable transformation, please click here and follow @edithanneduncan on Instagram. You can also read more at Southern Home.

Schumacher’s New Old-Fashioned

In response to a resurgence of traditional decor, Schumacher has released a remarkable assemblage of fabrics, wallpapers, trims, and pillows known as the “New Old-Fashioned” collection. Within its essence lies a delightful fusion of comfort and familiarity, intertwined with an alluring touch of novelty. By infusing vintage patterns such as florals, lace, and ruffles, with a renewed perspective, this collection undoubtedly fulfills our yearning for a tastefully nostalgic and elegantly aged aesthetic.

We are particularly fond of the crochet and Ric Rac tapes. A perfect nod to the 1970s and a beloved sewing box staple, these tapes bring such allure to upholstery, pillows, and window treatments with an immediate burst of irresistible charm. Playful and cheery, Ric Rac can be used alone or skillfully layered with other trims. Take a look!

The full collection can be viewed here. And for more old school inspiration from Schumacher, please be sure to check out their newly released book, Charm School.

The Dinner Bell by Stuffy Muffy

We are delighted to introduce The Dinner Bell, an exciting series by Emily of Stuffy Muffy, a dear friend of The Glam Pad. A harmonious blend of delectable recipes and exquisite taste, The Dinner Bell is a digital old-fashioned cookbook, reminiscent of the Junior League comb binding style from days of yore.

Cherished traditions will meet contemporary flavors and new skills will certainly be learned along the way. And stay tuned over the coming weeks for a special TGP recipe!

Laura Ashley for Batsheva

In a splendid union of creative forces, the year 2021 witnessed the remarkable collaboration between Batsheva Hay and Laura Ashley, resulting in their inaugural collection of captivating ready-to-wear garments adorned with vivid, archival Laura Ashley prints. This partnership was truly fated, as Hay’s very own namesake brand sprang forth from a vintage Laura Ashley dress that she held dear, wearing with love until it became an integral part of her personal brand.

As we commemorate Laura Ashley’s momentous 70th anniversary, a moment The Glam Pad began to celebrate in March, this extraordinary duo unveils their fourth exclusive limited-edition collection: Laura Ashley x Batsheva. Prepare to be enraptured by the whimsical allure of a Coney Island Beach, where Batsheva radiantly embodies the essence of playfulness and femininity. Captured through the lens of her talented husband, Alexei, these photographs transport you to a bygone era of the famed boardwalk. Take a peek at the collection and be sure to check out the full range here!

The Coronation of King Charles III and A Look Back At Coronation History

In a splendid display of regal grandeur, the majestic ceremony unfolded within the hallowed halls of Westminster Abbey. Marking an illustrious moment in history, King Charles III assumed his rightful place as the 40th distinguished monarch to be anointed in this venerable cathedral since 1066.

Today, we take a look back at coronation regalia and pantry throughout history. At the heart of this hallowed ceremony lies a collection of revered treasures, lovingly referred to as the coronation regalia, each holding a profound significance. These sacred artifacts form an extraordinary collection of the Sovereign’s Orb, Sovereign’s Scepter, Coronation Spoon, St. Edward’s Crown, and Imperial State Crown.

Holly Holden’s Equestrian Collection

If Saturday was not enough pomp and circumstance, the 149th annual Kentucky Derby took place at the storied Churchill Downs with Mage taking the crown. From the dazzling finery, refreshing mint juleps, exquisite hats, and race enthusiasts singing the beloved anthem ‘My Old Kentucky Home,’ the derby transcends tradition. Remarkably, this equestrian spectacle holds the distinction of being the longest-running sporting event in the United States, dating back to 1875.

A grand celebration of southern culture, the spectacular event is an iconic symbol of Americana that has The Glam Pad inspired to embrace equestrian style. Holly Holden, a long-time TGP favorite, has just the collection to capture our fascination.

LCDQ Legends Windows 2023

In last week’s edition of Tidbits we were patiently awaiting the grand beginning of LCDQ Legends and now the famed windows have been revealed! As the window displays of the esteemed showrooms belonging to the illustrious members of the LCDQ take center stage, becoming the crown jewels of Legends. Joining forces with the incomparable Mr. Fulk and the extraordinary Ms. Hampton, a gathering of immensely talented designers has pledged their unwavering dedication to curating this year’s captivating windows.

Among these visionaries are the likes of Jake Arnold, Paloma Contreras, David Frazier, Amy Meier, Breegan Jane, Noz Nozawa, and Studio Heimat, forming an illustrious constellation of creative brilliance. Take a look at some of our favorites!

At the heart of this Legends edition lies a thematic directive, fashion reigning supreme in its profound influence over home design, designers, and even architecture itself. Embodying this ethos flawlessly is the extraordinary plan of Eric Hughes, the renowned interior designer who works closely with his client Sarah Jessica Parker. Hughes envisions an awe-inspiring imagining of an  exquisite Parker dressing room, a magnificent tableau gracing the window of Mecox, leaving all who behold it in awe of its splendor.
