The Enchanted World of Blackberry Farm with Mary Celeste Beall

If you are looking for the perfect place to spend your summer vacation, look no further than the acclaimed resort hotels Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. Blackberry Farm is a luxury hotel and resort situated on a pastoral 4,200-acre estate in the Great Smoky Mountains, and it is one of the most celebrated small luxury resorts in the world. We are delighted to welcome Proprietor, Mary Celeste Beall to The Glam Pad Today!

For more than a decade, Mary Celeste has lived and worked on the family-owned properties. She first joined her late husband Sam as he led the transformation of Blackberry Farm into a renowned food, wine and wellness destination. As Proprietor, Mary Celeste, alongside her father-in-law, Sandy, and the Blackberry team, drove the creation and opening of Blackberry Mountain as it evolved into a haven for preservation and personal exploration in relaxation, wellness and adventure. She led creative direction for launching the brand’s print magazine, Blackberry Magazine.  She continues to share her vision for the expansion of the Blackberry brand, continuing a longstanding reputation for renowned hospitality and celebrated wine and food.

Over the years, the Blackberry brand has garnered industry praise, including Blackberry Farm’s three James Beard Awards for Best Chef—Southeast, Outstanding Wine Program and Outstanding Service. Blackberry Farm was also named Bon Appetit’s No. 1 Hotel for Food Lovers. Blackberry Mountain is adding to the brand’s awards with recognitions including ELLE Décor Travel A-List – Best New Hotel, Hideaway Report – Hideaway of the Year, and inclusion in Travel + Leisure’s It List for best new hotels in the world.

Welcome, Mary Celeste!

Mary Celeste Beall, Proprietor of Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain

Q:  Please tell us a little about the history of Blackberry Farm… How it began, your involvement, and how it has grown over the years.

A:  In 1976 my in-laws, Kreis and Sandy Beall, moved to Walland to make Blackberry Farm their family’s home.  They recognized how special this place was and wanted to share it with others so they opened to the public as a six-room country inn. The Beall family began creating a tradition of Southern hospitality, notable cuisine and cherished experiences that still exists in everything we do today. Kreis and Sandy’s son, Sam Beall, took over in 1998, and he ushered in a new era of the Blackberry legacy, guided by his passion for food, wine, adventure and living a full life. With Sam as proprietor, Blackberry expanded its foundation into much of how the property is experienced today. The property has evolved so much over the years, always driven by our family and what we enjoy. The farmstead and culinary became a heightened focus and the wine cellar expanded with the opening of The Barn at Blackberry Farm. Blackberry Farm Brewery was created and the Blackberry Farm Foundation was launched.

I have always been involved in the property, supporting Sam and the Blackberry team in different ways, as well as raising our family. When Sam died in 2016, I stepped into the role of Proprietor. Today, we continue the tradition of hospitality, service and providing unimaginable opportunities and memories for each guest. We opened Blackberry Mountain in 2019, inviting even more opportunity for guests to fall in love with the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and continue our mission to help protect the land we love.

No matter the evolution of the property, Blackberry continues to welcome guests from the far reaches of the globe, as well as nearby neighbors, with the genuine Southern hospitality and personal attention that have become the estate’s hallmark.

Q: Blackberry Farm has received countless awards over the years including recognition for best food, best wine, best hospitality, best hideaway… What do you think keeps your customers coming back year after year?

A:  I believe it all comes back to our authentic hospitality. Everything the team does is executed with a genuine desire to create memorable, beautiful experiences. Hospitality is at the heart of everything we do, and I think our guests can feel that. We want Blackberry to feel like home. We want guests to not only feel welcome but to immediately feel comfortable when they visit us. I think they can feel that too.

Q: What are some of your personal favorite activities on the farm?

A:  That’s a tough question! It depends on the season, but I absolutely love any time I can spend exploring outside. Getting out on our miles of hiking trails makes for such a great day. Seeing the evolution of the forest through each season is fascinating to me – especially watching as the bare trees and dormant flowers come back to life in the spring.

Q:  How would you describe the design aesthetic and signature look of Blackberry Farm? Did you work with an interior designer to decorate the all of the rooms, cottages, and houses within the property?

A:  Warm, welcoming, classic but fresh. We are fortunate to work with talented architects who help us create spaces with amazing light, finishes and scale where our guests always feel a sense of place.

Blackberry Farm was originally my in-laws’ home, decorated with antiques and with a classic English country house feel. Over the years, the aesthetic has continued to evolve, but we always maintain the goal of Blackberry Farm feeling like home. And often, t’s about the details – from the fresh-cut flowers on the tables to the linen napkins and sterling silver at dinner. For years my mother-in-law, Kreis, led the interior design. She created Blackberry’s own design team and hired friends along the way to help with different projects until 2017 when we expanded our team and hired design director Jason Bell to lead Blackberry Farm Design. As a hotel, we are constantly evaluating and updating our rooms, cottages and common spaces, so having a local team dedicated to maintaining the beauty, look and feel of Blackberry is critical for us.

Q: I understand you now have your own in-house interior design team, Blackberry Farm Design.  How did this group come about, and are the designers available for projects nationwide?

A:  I feel so fortunate to have our own talented team dedicated to maintaining the beauty, look and function of Blackberry Farm. Yes, they work on homes and projects across the country.

Q: What are five things you would recommend for fans who want to bring a little taste of Blackberry Farm into their own home?

A: Don’t be afraid to mix old and new. Give family treasures a spark of freshness with a new finish or a modern piece paired with it.

Prioritize lighting. Candles, dimmable lamps and beautiful natural light are a magical combination.

The most welcoming spaces are comfortable. Use throws, plump pillows and a mix of seating.

Find great art. Work with artists you admire to create pieces that tell your story.

Bring the outside in. Take advantage of the views and find inspiration outside!

Q: You have spoken openly about the adversity you experienced through the loss of your husband at such a young age. What is your advice to others who are going through painful times… How do you pick up the pieces and not just survive, but thrive?

A:  We will all go through trials – personal struggles, difficulties in relationships, health challenges or loss. However, all of our journeys are unique, and how we are affected by our painful times depends on so many factors, from how we were raised to who we surround ourselves with. Because I didn’t know any other young widows, and our immediate community hadn’t experienced a loss like ours, I quickly realized it wasn’t just me who didn’t know what to do when Sam died. Our friends, my children’s friends, my family – none of us knew exactly what to do. I found it very helpful to tell myself that there were no rules for grieving and handling our loss. I realized that what applied to one family may not be applicable to us, which freed me in so many ways to follow my gut and do my best every day to make the next decision.

I also knew Sam would want us to keep living, which meant showing up at my children’s sports events even when I wanted to crawl under my covers and cry. I had to get comfortable being uncomfortable and not let some tears and anxiety over missing their dad or doing something alone prevent me from being the best mother I could be. And yes, it means, even to this day, having difficult conversations and putting myself out there to lead my family when I wish their dad was here. I follow my gut and take each situation as it comes. One thing I know is, we cannot predict the future. All we can do is make the best out of each day we are given!

Q: Tell us a fun (or funny!) fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know!

A:  I grew up on a dead-end street in Alabama. It was a charming, close-knit community but not the highest traffic area for a lemonade stand. My best friend, Chris, and I loved attempting our own store  – sometimes lemonade but on a few occasions, we took it to another level and sold “treasures” from our houses. We collected a few things from each of our homes and sold them. Our store didn’t last long. One of our neighbors called Chris’s mom to say, “Hey, I just bought your favorite candy dish for $2. I’ll bring it over later.” For Christmas that year, my mother had a “storefront” made for Chris and me, but it was gifted with the promise that we would not use her living room accessories as our inventory!

Q: What does the future hold for Blackberry Farm?

A:  Blackberry Farm will be celebrating 50 years in 2026! We are so fortunate to be stewards of this beautiful land adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Our future is all about continuing to create welcoming spaces for our guests and homeowners to relax and escape their everyday. To me, there is nothing more important than connection, and we want to continue being a place that fosters that – connection to self, to others and to nature.

Thank you so much, Mary Celeste, for joining us today! What a breathtaking property, beautiful decor, and such an inspiring story! To learn more, please visit Blackberry Farm and follow @blackberry.mountain on Instagram for ongoing inspiration.

Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, La Cienega Legends, and Mrs. Alice Coronation Collection

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we look at the Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens, La Cienega Legends, and the Mrs. Alice Coronation Collection. Written by Natalie Aldridge

Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens

For almost four decades, the Lake Forest Showhouse & Gardens has flourished as a highly anticipated occasion within the Chicago design scene, becomming one of the most prestigious showhouses in the country. This year’s outstanding lineup of designers includes Alexandra Kaehler, Sarah Vaile, and Evan Millard, eager to partake in the metamorphosis of this year’s property, a beautiful red brick Georgian-style house. Originally built by the legendary architect William Frazier in the late 1960s, the home will be transformed into a breathtaking exhibition of unparalleled artistry.

On May 8th, the showhouse’s Honorary Chairs and A-list interior designers Ashley Whittaker and Timothy Whealon, will be joining Emma Bazilian, content director of Frederic and author of Charm School, for an intriguing lecture and light lunch. Tickets for this exciting event can be purchased here.

Not only is the occasion a splendid gathering, but it also serves a dual purpose as a fundraising effort for the Lake Forest Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. Throughout the years, this remarkable event has succeeded in generating a staggering sum of over $5 million and continues to accumulate more. Running from May 6th to June 4th, tickets to attend can be purchased here.

La Cienega Legends

Back in the 1950s, the La Cienega Design Quarter rose to fame as the go-to destination for interior designers seeking inspiration and exquisite finds. These gifted artists and visionaries resided above their design studios in the luxurious apartments lining La Cienega Boulevard, including notable figures such as William Haines, Elsie de Wolfe, Frances Elkins, Tony Duquette, and Michael Taylor. Today, many of those charming buildings have been impeccably preserved and house an array of antique shops and design showrooms, attracting designers in search of the rare and distinctive.

Each year the famed quarter hosts La Cienega Legends, and this year it is back with a regal twist – “The Fashion of Home” will be the theme, paying homage to the kings and queens of fashion. Adding to the excitement, the prestigious Living Legend Awards by LCDQ will be bestowed upon renowned designers Ken Fulk and Alexa Hampton. The event promises to be a visual treat, with a partial recreation of Sarah Jessica Parker’s lavish dressing room showcased at Mecox, curated by her talented designer Eric Hughes.

Alessandra Branca window vignette for Serena & Lily, LCDQ 2022

Luxury showrooms, awe-inspiring window vignettes crafted by design maestros like Jake Arnold, Paloma Contreras, Noz Nozawa, and Studio Heimat, as well as engaging keynote panels and glamorous cocktail parties will all be part of this sensational affair. If you are in Los Angeles, do not miss out on this unique event! Taking place May 9 to the 11th, more information and tickets can be found here.

Mrs. Alice Coronation Collection

In honor of His Majesty’s coronation, Mrs. Alice has launched the Coronation Collection, a commemorative series celebrating King Charles III’s ascension to the throne.

The anticipation is building as the coronation of King Charles III is set to take place May 6th, promising to be a remarkable event that will captivate the world’s attention. As the ceremony unfolds, we can expect to witness a breathtaking display of royal regalia, magnificent robes, and glittering jewels, as King Charles III is crowned in Westminster Abbey.

In true British fashion, celebrations of the occasion will be big and bold making this collection perfect for Coronation soirees. With classic prints, colors, and commemorative motifs, the collection is also a collectible piece of history.

The world will be watching, as the coronation of King Charles III marks a new chapter in the history of the British monarchy, a symbol of continuity, stability, and strength.

Inside the London Home of de Gourney’s Hannah Cecil Gurney

As the daughter of de Gournay founder Claud Cecil Gurney, Hannah Cecil Gurney grew up immersed in a world of glorious hand-painted wallpaper. Today she serves as director of the company, and the London apartment where she lives with her husband, their four children, and two dogs, serves as the dreamiest laboratory.

The three-story, Victorian era home is located in Battersea, London just a short distance from the de Gournay London showroom and Battersea park. Working without a designer, Hannah has made full use of de Gournay’s hand painted wallpapers throughout the property – creating a spectacular showcase for her family company’s bespoke products that also meets the functional requirements of a growing family.

The home’s most recent update showcases new installations of ‘River Scenes of Benghal’ in the drawing room – a scenic design of India’s historic waterways hand painted onto gleaming gilded paper – and the ‘Belvoir’ Chinoiserie in the master bedroom – a hand painted recreation of a 300-year-old Chinese wallpaper from Belvoir Castle in the UK.

Extensions to the property now showcase ‘Little London’ within a basement playroom – an illustrative scene of London filled with animal characters and spanning custom joinery – the hand embroidered ‘Fyodor’ wall upholstery on Claret coloured linen in the adjoining utility room – depicting a trailing vine and bird pattern – and the ‘Cecily’ Chinoiserie on Pink Xuan paper in the new nursery: a perfectly pretty garden scene, named for Hannah’s new baby daughter.

From cozy canopied beds and cheeky needlepoint pillows to treasured personal collections and antique furniture, the book guides readers on how to execute traditional design for the next generation.

Charm School: The Schumacher Guide to Traditional Decorating for Today

Chapters are filled with timeless spaces by designers like Ashley Whittaker, Markham Roberts, Celerie Kemble, Rita Konig and more, as well as looks back at the work of legendary talents like Sister Parish and Mario Buatta who continue to inspire today. Each room – many of which incorporate Schumacher’s exquisite textiles and wallcoverings – illustrates the successful ways in which today’s decorators are melding an appreciation for the past with an eye towards the future.

Dovima Paris’ Grand Tour

Jane Pendry, founder of the timelessly chic clothing brand Dovima Paris, will be making a grand tour, popping up at select locales around the United States. Starting in New York April 26th, Pendry will then make her way to Chicago, New Orleans, Dallas, and Charlotte.

Founded in 2013, Pendry’s creative journey began with honing her keen eye for fashion at the iconic WWD in Paris and later at the prestigious Vogue in London, where she blossomed as a journalist and stylist. Her artistic flair then led her to spend seven years immersed in the world of home furnishings, designing for the renowned Laura Ashley, where she discovered the sheer joy of collaborating with skilled artisans and factories.

But Pendry’s true passion flourished when she stepped into the role of design and business director at fashion powerhouses such as Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy, working alongside visionary designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Her creative expertise and strategic acumen propelled her to Ralph Lauren in New York, where she continued to make her mark in the industry, leaving a trail of innovation and inspiration in her wake.

Upon returning to Paris, Pendry was struck by the lack of clothing options that were both stylish and beautifully crafted with luxurious fabrics and vibrant colors. She yearned for garments that could seamlessly transition from day to night, with the ability to be dressed up or down effortlessly while still exuding an undeniable allure that went beyond fleeting fashion trends. Driven by this vision and her innate creativity, she decided to take matters into her own hands and set out to create a clothing brand that would fill this void in the market. Her clothing is chic, feminine, and wearable. Perfectly #verytgp!

The Illustrious History of Indian Block Printing and Its Resurgence

Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Decor enthusiasts can appreciate the alluring presence of block prints in today’s interiors. Whether adorning plush throw pillows, luxe upholstered furniture, or richly appointed tabletops, this textile technique has stood the test of time, and in recent years made a  resurgence. But beyond its aesthetic charm, the intricate history of block printing reveals a compelling tale of resilience and craftsmanship.

The art of hand block printing is thought to have originated in ancient China over 4000 years ago. But our story truly begins with India in the 12th century. India’s journey to becoming the world’s hub of block printing begins with the creation of beautiful block printed fabrics for the royal courts. Under the Mughal Empire, many centuries later, the art began to flourish within regions like Gujrat and Rajasthan.

The art form then spread to other regions of the country, each adding their own twist and techniques making for unique color and pattern combinations. Slowly, block printed textiles became a point of great national pride and tradition for India but did not quite reach the rest of the globe.

In the 1950s, revolutionary American designers, Charles and Ray Eames, went on a grand tour of India. Upon their return they gave the Indian government a report called “The India Report” that explored how India could keep and enhance its traditional craft industries. This report led to the establishment of the National Institute of Design in 1961, which works to preserve and spread this valuable art form.

Today, India still reigns supreme as the hub of this ancient craft, where masterful artisans meticulously carve wooden blocks with precision before delicately submerging them in vibrant dyes and pressing them onto textiles and paper. To ensure an exquisite final product, each hue and every element requires the creation of a distinct block. Every detail a separate layer building upon each other to final print. The craft is honed over years of dedicated practice, passed down from one generation to the next with deep reverence for tradition.

Molly Mahon

While block printed textiles and wallcoverings have existed for many millennia, its sudden stardom is timely. With growing interest in hand crafted goods, print-making facilities have experienced revitalization. Younger generations are again exploring the magic of the traditional craft. Many Western designers such as Molly Mahon, Soane Britain, and John Robshaw have embraced the beauty of this textile and their love for India by producing block printed textiles of their own. Julia Amory has made block print de rigueur for tabletop and fashion amongst the the Grandmillennial set. The art form has since brought us beautiful textiles, wallpaper, and beyond, far above the ability of any machine to duplicate.

She grew up in Savannah, Georgia and attended college at Washington & Lee in Lexington, Virginia – two beautifully historic towns that have and continue to inspire her work. After practicing law, Katie turned her attention to her true passion – interior design.  She lives in Atlanta with her husband, two young daughters, and Lagotto Romagnolo.

Welcome, Katie!

Q:  Tell us a bit about your career path. How did you decide you wanted to become an interior designer?

A:  I suppose I didn’t decide to become an interior designer until I was in my early thirties.  I was born in Boston, grew up in Savannah, GA and attended college at Washington & Lee in Lexington, VA.  This trio of beautifully historic towns has and continues to influence my work and passion for architecture and interior design.    And I am sure it is the source of my love of red brick homes.

I was, however, determined to be on the “lawyer” path from a very young age.  I majored in American History and subsequently attended law school.  After a few years of practicing business litigation, I knew the “lawyer” path was the wrong one.  If I was honest with myself, I should’ve seen that coming.  My favorite classes in college were in the art history department, and I (like many designers) always found myself rearranging and scheming rooms from a very young age.  One of my fondest memories is my mom bringing middle-school me to the local fabric store to pick out fabrics for my bedding and bed skirt.  AND – I got to pick out my paint color!

After some time off from practicing law and once my youngest was out of diapers, I turned my attention toward all things interior design. The things that made me a good lawyer have translated into my interior design business – sticking to deadlines, being organized and being responsive to my clients and vendors.   But unlike practicing law, this industry allows me to engage my right brain as well.

My business really took off after we completed the renovation of our 1925 home a couple of years ago and it was featured on a home tour benefitting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  I haven’t looked backed since!

Q:  How do you define your style?

A:  My style – both in interiors and my personal style – is timeless with a twist.  “Trendy” is a four-letter word in my book.

Q: Where do you find mentorship and/or inspiration for your business?

A:  Travel is a huge source of inspiration, and I will never stop soaking up ideas from shelter magazines, design books, blogs like TGP, and movies.   Design podcasts are also a huge source of education for me.  I think it is safe to say I’ve listened to almost every “How to Decorate” podcast from Ballard Designs, and I love all things Business of Home.

Q: Do you have any favorite go-to paints, wallpapers, linens, artists, etc.?

A:  Farrow & Ball is always my first stop (especially in older homes).  In fact, my entire home is painted in F&B!  My oldest daughter knew her room was “cabbage white” before she knew how to ride a bike.  However, I’ve also found some real stunners from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore.

For wallpapers, Twigs always knocks it out of the park.  Soane has gorgeous wallpapers as well.

For fabrics, I’d use Rose Tarlow’s “Gigi” stripe or Rose Cummings “Swedish Stripe” in every room if I could.

For linens, D. Porthault is the ultimate luxury.  I also adore Biscuit Home.

David Yarrow is my new favorite photographer.  I was able to view his work on a recent trip to Colorado and was floored!  I also love Julie Blackmon’s work.

James Andrew Smith and America Martin are high on my list of favorite artists.  I am also a big fan of Olivia Fields, Hayley Sheldon, Kristin Shearer, and Brian Coleman.

Q: What are 5 everyday luxuries you could not live without?

A:  Revision Intellishade and Hydrating Serum to start every day

A generous spritz or two of Hermes eau d’orange verte

Scented and unscented candles

Local produce AND coffee

My Tempurpedic mattress

Q: What are your goals for Wolf Interiors over the next five years?

A:  I hope Wolf Interiors can take on more “whole home” projects.  I really enjoyed seeing my own renovation through from start to finish (from creating the lighting plan and sourcing all the lighting, to creating a paint schedule, to furniture planning and procuring the soft goods).  It is so rewarding to work with an architect and contractor to completely transform (or create) a space.

I have quite a few projects out of state, but I’d love to have a project in the low country – namely Savannah or Bluffton.

Q: What is one classic staple that every room should have?

A:  That’s easy — a piece of brown antique furniture.

Q: What is your favorite design or coffee table book?

A:  If you saw my pile, you’d know why this is such a hard question!  One of my favorite weekend morning activities is to pour a big cup of coffee and plop down in our sunroom to flip through design books.  Lately I’ve had all things Gil Shafer, Jeffrey Bilhuber, and Summer Thornton in heavy rotation.

Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A:  When I am not spending time with my husband, two daughters, and Lagotto Romagnolo, I enjoy traveling, cooking, and playing tennis.  Lately I’ve gotten really in to pickleball and mahjong.

Q: What do you consider the most exciting part of your work, and how do you stay energized on a project?

A:  It is never lost on me that my clients are making a large investment and trusting me with their most sacred space.  It is beyond thrilling to be able to work with someone to make a house a home!  Although the process can be a long one (especially these days), I try to envision all the happy memories that will be made in the finished project.   That first family dinner in the dining room?  That first chat over snacks and cocktails on the corner banquette in the living room?  What is more energizing than that?

Thank you so much for joining us today, Katie! We love seeing your beautiful work and cannot wait to follow your career!
