Style Profile: Nina Long

Nina (Nash) Long is an Atlanta-based interior designer who loves historic preservation, antiques, and timeless decor with a generous dose of bold color and a sprinkle of modern touches. Her business partner is Don Easterling, and together they strike the perfect balance creating interiors that are not only beautiful but meaningful and comfortable. I have been a huge fan of their work ever since seeing this 1911 Neel Reid home they respectfully brought back to life.  Today, The  Glam Pad is delighted to welcome Nina for a Q&A and an in-depth glimpse into her exquisite portfolio. Welcome, Nina!

Nina Long with her business partner Don Easterling

Q: When did you know you wanted to pursue a career in interior design, and what did your career path look like?

A:  I’ve always been a creative person, when I was younger, I was a big artist so I thought I wanted to be a painter when I grew up! I was voted ‘Most Artistic’ in High School and ended up getting a dual degree in Graphic Design and Fine Art. Interior Design wasn’t something that appealed to me in school for some reason but I ended up taking a job as a design assistant after college and then the rest was history. I think it all goes hand in hand for sure and my learned skills with scale and proportions as well as my natural abilities for color and patterns really made for me to be able to excel in Interior Design.

Q: How do you define your style and how has it evolved over the years?

A: As far as Interior Design, my style is a constant slow evolution. I was very transitional when I first started then as I got more experienced and older, I was really able to settle in to what I loved and what my true aesthetic is which has grown to be more classic and traditional but with a fresh spin. I think a good designer can truly do any style though because not all our clients are into the same look so you need to be able to take what they like and help them to define that and, in the end, the results will be a perfect portrayal whether it’s glamorous and modern or English country house and florally.

Q: Tell me about the design process of Easterling & Long and how you and Don work together.

A: Don and I have worked together for over 10 years, it’s probably up to 15 at this point! I lost count. I started off as his assistant and he has really taught me everything about Interior Design. We hit it off so well that years later we felt a partnership was more in line as our relationship and projects grew. Our office is based out of Mathews Design Group attached to the retail store Mathews Furniture + Design in Buckhead. We really have a one-of-a-kind, unique set up and it’s awesome, our clients know where to find us and we have access to hundreds of amazing furniture, art, lighting and accessory vendors through there. Mathews has been an Atlanta staple for over 40 years so there’s an accountant, delivery scheduler, their own warehouse and an order entry person so we don’t have to worry about doing any of that ourselves and have so much freedom that we can totally focus on the design aspect and our clients. It’s fun because in addition to our own projects, we do the buying for the retail showroom so we know all the fabulous lines like the back of our hands have such a deep knowledge of the furniture world, the ins and outs manufacturing and production process so that has been very beneficial for us and our clients. We are lucky to have been able to travel all over the world through this position and visit factories and design studios from Mexico City to Vietnam.

interiors

Q: How do you ensure that your designs stand the test of time?

A: We aren’t into trends and usually advise against them. If a client really wants something though we will try to make it work but a little goes a long way-everything doesn’t have to have such an impact, there needs to be balance. If you are going to invest in expensive pieces, the big-ticket items need to be timeless and we can weave in something fun on smaller items that can be changed out later on like throw pillows, lamps or little accent tables.

Q: What are your thoughts on the Grandmillennial movement?

A: I actually really like it! I think sprinkled in it can be very pretty. I love a ruffle and a floral so I’m all for it but I certainly wouldn’t recommend a whole house done top to bottom in that because I think it could possibly become tired in a few years.

Q: Has Covid had an impact on your business? On the way your clients live?

A: Well 2020 and 2021 have been record years for us and there’s no showing of slowing down anytime soon. Don and I have always been busy but this is another level, we have a waiting list right now. I feel bad having people wait months for us but that’s the only was we can fit everyone in and still be able to properly do our jobs with our existing clients. People are spending more time at home and it’s a good thing!

Q: Do you have any favorite go-to paints, wallpapers , linens, artists, etc.?

A: We definitely have our go to’s! Farrow & Ball has the best paint colors hands down, we also have been using a lot of wallpaper the past few years, some of our favorites are Degournay and the Iksel collection with Schumacher. Waterworks is also our go to for plumbing and tile because the designs and finishes are so good and the quality is amazing.

Q: What are 5 everyday luxuries you could not live without?

A: A hot bath with Epsom salts, essential oils and a face mask, Starbucks coffee with almond milk, beautiful window treatments in my favorite fabrics, crisp fancy bedding that makes me feel like I’m in a hotel and last but not least the smell of my baby Collier! I don’t know if it’s his baby laundry detergent or what but something about a sweet baby smell is better than anything else, it needs to be bottled!

Q: When you aren’t busy designing, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: This plays well off the previous question-I love more then anything in the world spending time with family and our new baby. Weekend nights at home by the fire or walking around the neighborhood with my husband and little Collier is what completes my life and fills my heart and soul to the brim.

Thank you, Nina, for joining us today! We are huge fans of your work!

Valentine’s Day at Scully & Scully

I was visiting with my friend Holly Holden the other day, and our mutual love for Scully & Scully came up. Not only do they have the most exquisite treasures from jewelry to tabletop to home furnishings, but they are family-owned business that has been located in its same venerable location on Manhattan’s Park Avenue since 1934. “There aren’t many of those left,” said Holly. “And that’s half the reason I shop there!” Scully & Scully also happens to be the largest distributor of Herend in the United States, and they offer an extensive range of exclusive treasures made by artisans from around the world. The store is a gem and hands down the best place to select the perfect gift for any occasion. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m excited to share some lovely suggestions… Make sure to check shipping status before placing your order in order to ensure Valentine’s Day delivery!

10 Tips for a Lovely Valentine’s Day at Home

2

British culinary star, Amy-Beth Ellice, is joining us to share her seasoned tips to creating a memorable Valentine’s Day within the comfort of your own home. Amy has been cooking since the age of three, and her first book Amy’s Baking Year, made her Britain’s youngest published cookery author in 2014 at just 16 years of age. In addition to the delicious dishes she makes in the kitchen, she also has tremendous talent for creating beautiful tablescapes. The Glam Pad loves Valentine’s Day, and we are delighted to welcome Amy today! All photography is from Amy’s portfolio.

10 Tips for a Lovely Valentine’s Day at Home

by Amy-Beth Ellice

  1.  Start the day with a special breakfast. Nothing says “I love you” like breakfast in bed! You can get ahead by making pancake batter and setting a breakfast tray the night before so in the morning you can rustle up a delicious treat in no time.

2.  Give homemade edible gifts to your loved ones – heart shaped cookies are fun to make and decorate and are a sweet treat that everyone will love!

3.  Plan a romantic three course meal at home with your favourite dishes or choose a theme and escape to your favourite destination through the menu, for example, ‘A Night in Paris’. Serve French onion soup, steak au poivre and chocolate mousse for dessert.

4.  Set a beautiful table. Embrace your creative side with hand written menu and place cards to add a personalised touch.

5.  For a fun touch to your table, try folding your napkins into hearts or envelopes and fill with chocolates and a love letter.

6.  Fresh flowers always make a table feel special and I always love to arrange them myself but you could of course collect some from your local florist. To keep things easy, stick to using one type of flower – red roses are classic or I like mixing shades of pinks and red roses to create a festive Valentine’s Day arrangement.

7.  Create a romantic atmosphere with a playlist of your favourite love songs and light candles to create ambience.

8.  Make a festive cocktail to start the evening on a special note. Try a raspberry royale – simply pour 1 teaspoon of raspberry liqueur into a champagne glass, add a few raspberries and top with champagne.

9,  Dress up to make your Valentine’s Day dinner at home feel extra special.

Amy-Beth Ellice

10. And most importantly plan and prepare in advance. Get ahead by setting the table and preparing things in advance so you can enjoy the day.

Amy, thank you so much for the heart felt inspiration! Such beautiful suggestions!

How Do You Curate Your Aesthetic?

8

By Natalie Aldridge

While The Glam Pad is a proponent of traditional interiors, we celebrate individualism and the pursuit of finding one’s style of decoration. Even within the realm of classical interiors lays room for expression and the breaking of the confines of tradition. This task, however, can be a daunting challenge requiring the development of a personal aesthetic… and we often receive inquiries about how to do just that. As purveyors of inspiration, we have broken down our top tips for curating your decor aesthetic.

1. Start collecting!

This is your free pass to be a tad of a hoarder. And of course, we mean in the chicest way. Collecting objet allows your interests to shine through in an interior. Expensive or not, acquiring goods of a common theme suddenly offers a moment of unmatchable decoration.

2. Watch Movies

We carry moments of films with us throughout our whole lives. Subconsciously these moments influence our style, interests, and even personality. Making the effort to watch movies out of your typical wheelhouse can offer exciting aesthetic experiences. Spiraling down the rabbit hole of a particular director, era, or avant-garde genre opens the door to  undiscovered realm of inspiration. And stay tuned because we will be sharing our most inspirational movie pics soon!

3. Collage

And we don’t mean pinning! The act of physically collaging brings tangibility to the exercise. Tearing pages of old magazines, thrift books, pasting cloth scrapes, photographs, and more allows one’s mind to wander and discover. Reappearing motifs that emerge in your collaging can be worked into the home by way of color, artwork, and fabric.

4. Read It All

Read as much as you can. Revisit old and new books. Read coffee table books, don’t just buy them to sit on a table (we are all guilty of this). Document your findings, take notes, make doodles, manifest the visual feast within the text.

5. Release Any Fear

One of the most vital components of honing an aesthetic is being fearless. After all, interior style and all that comes in between are personal interpretations. Emulation of a particular style should be infused with your sensibility and there truly are no rules to that.

Kristin Gish

Forging a personal aesthetic takes time but with the above tips you will be sure to kick start the process. And never forget, it is about fun and exploration, two things The Glam Pad celebrates each day.

An Art Deco Masterpiece in Atlanta

7

The homes in Atlanta, particularly in the Buckhead neighborhood, never cease to take my breath away.  I love perusing the real estate listings in the area, and when I come across something truly spectacular, I just have to share. The elegance of the 1930s Art Deco period has always inspired me, and today’s home tour is a true masterpiece. Built in 1937 by Atlanta’s celebrated architect Philip Trammell Shutze. The 9,600 square-foot manse is nestled within 4.39 acres of manicured grounds, offering supreme privacy and commanding beautiful views from one of the highest elevations in the city. Additional details from the real estate listing are below…

Meticulously restored to perfection by craftsmen worldwide, this estate is the same home as it was in 1937, sans the newly updated kitchen. The grand foyer welcomes you with black and white marble floors, arched doorways and exquisite detailed moldings. Dramatic elliptical staircase leads to three levels of four main en suite bedrooms and one nursery bedroom with seven bathrooms. Bank vault wine cellar and tasting nook accommodating 1,100 to 1500 bottles. Luxury formal living and dining areas with spacious rooms. Wood burning fireplaces throughout. The third level of the home includes an enclosed glass penthouse conservatory and bar from the SS Normandie ocean liner. The swan weather vane atop the home is an original design by Shutze and is functional. The tranquil pool and pavilion are as Shutze envisioned 80 years ago.

What a treasure! Please contact Sotheby’s for additional information on this exquisite home.  I was also very excited to learn that a new book on Schutze is scheduled for release this April… pre-order now!

Finding Joy with Mally Skok and her Cape Cod Home

According to interiors and textile designer Mally Skok, the only rules regarding creativity and the way you live your life is that there are no rules! “Make your own rules.  Please just listen to the voice that lives inside your brain,” she says in her recently released book, Mally’s Little Handbook: A Guide to finding Your Joy Through My Designer Eyes.

Originally from South Africa, Mally and her family moved in the mid 1990s from London to America where she launched her award-winning interior design business.  Mally’s global experiences helped train her eye and perfect her ability to transform homes into comfortable, colorful living spaces. She recently moved from the Boston area and established residency in Palm Beach where she has opened a new studio off of Worth Avenue.

Mally Skok

Mally’s Little Handbook shares her secrets on how to develop “an eye,” by taking time to smell the roses and becoming a “noticer.” She writes, “So many people walk through life blind to the mysterious and fascinating world that surrounds them. You can change this!” From junk stores, flea markets, and supermarket flowers to becoming the hostess with the mostess, the book outlines Mally’s personal views of the world and how to apply them to loving your home and living your best life. “Take what you like, discard the rest, make it your own…” she shares.

Mally’s Little Handbook

Today, we are delighted to take a tour of Mally’s Cape Cod home that she and her husband built 25 years ago with architect Sally Weston.  “It has been a great joy in my life living in it, designing it,” she said. Inside you will see all of the tips Mally shares in her book come to life, a true reflection of her personal style and life story. “Be bold, be real, be yourself, and be happy and you, your house, and your guests will love you for it! trust me on this one!” she says.

Mimi McMakin Refreshes the Gasparilla Inn

9

Boca Grande is one of Florida’s best kept secrets… Located on Gasparilla Island, Boca Grande is a tiny seven-mile-long barrier island on Florida’s Southwest Coast midway between Sarasota and Ft. Myers. It is a charming bit of paradise with a small-town feel of yesteryear. There are no high-rises, no fast food restaurants, no chain stores, and no traffic lights. Billboards and other exterior advertising are banned by the Conservation District.

Visitors flock to Boca Grande to savor the white sand beach, world class fishing, golf, tennis, and fine food.  But most of all, they come for the privacy and unadulterated peace and tranquility this little-known island hideaway affords.  On Boca Grande, there are no traffic jams, as golf carts are the preferred method of transportation to tool around the tiny island measuring about seven miles long, and only one mile across at its widest.

Gasparilla Island

Second home owners and regular visitors have included the DuPonts, Vanderbilts, J.P. Morgan, Katherine Hepburn, George Steinbrenner, and the Bush families. And of course, Mimi McMakin, who has overseen the interiors of The Gasparilla Inn & Club for nearly two decades.  A getaway destination opened for snowbirds in 1913, The Gasparilla Inn remains one of the largest surviving resort hotels in Florida, and it is the center of village life on Gasparilla Island.

Last year, Mimi McMakin of Kemble Interiors and her team completed a refresh of The Gasparilla Inn & Club.

The Gasparilla Inn

“When you work on a property that is so appropriate for its setting and loved by generations, one of the most important things is to not mess it up,” Mimi told Town & Country. “Many people have strong emotional connections with the Gasparilla Inn, having gone there with their parents, even grandparents, over the years. That being said, there’s a fine line between charming patina and simply worn out.”

A native of Palm Beach, she has always been one of my favorite interior designers, and no one captures “Old Florida” like Mimi McMakin. You can read about her historic Florida roots here.

Walking through The Gasparilla Inn’s sun-bathed, pillared entrance and into the lobby, guests are embraced with the tranquil civility of a time that stands still at this classic resort. The Gasparilla Inn also happens to be a fabulous place for a destination wedding! One of my dear friends was married on the island last month, and I was delighted to see Mimi’s renovation first hand!

Let’s take a look! Pictures were graciously provided by Carmel Brantley of Brantley Photography and I have added a few from my iPhone as well.

Photo by Carmel Brantley of Brantley Photography

Let’s begin with The Beach Club, located directly on the Gulf of Mexico, which is accompanied by nine private cottages. The Beach Cottages took my breath away!! The cottages provide the rare opportunity for waterside living with all of the impeccable services of The Gasparilla Inn & Club, in addition to a central pool and cabana for Beach Cottage guests to mix and mingle in a more private setting.

A team of artists were employed by Mimi to hand paint the walls, and her attention to detail can be seen throughout, like coffee tables filled with local sand and shells encased in lucite, beautiful tropical murals, and whimsical wicker animals.

Exploring Very Peri: Pantone’s Color of the Year 2022

19

In all honesty, I have always rolled my eyes at the annual “Color of the Year” announcement, dismissing it as a marketing ploy, but it turns out there is actually a science behind it! Contributing Editor, Natalie Aldridge, is giving us the inside scoop… and we are also taking the opportunity to share some of our favorite “peri” rooms. We have loved this lovely color for years and feel that it is timeless!

Pantone Color of the Year: Very Peri

by Natalie Aldridge

Color us delighted! Pantone has announced 2022’s Color of the Year as (drum roll) Very Peri. Each new year the formidable company best known for its development of the first color matching system selects a color to reflect global culture, interests, and events of the moment. Here at The Glam Pad, Pantone’s yearly announcement offers an exciting opportunity to reflect and look forward to the year ahead.

At a surface level, the selection of Color of the Year can appear arbitrary and maybe even a tad pomp. With the vast range of colors selected throughout the years, it could even appear as though the hue declared “It” for the entirety of a year may have been pluck from a hat.

On the contrary, Pantone conducts immense research in preparation for the selection. What originally began as an afterthought developed into a panel of twenty individuals dedicated to careful analysis. Research begins in the Spring and lasts nearly nine months. The team evaluates everything from current events, economic conditions, films in production, sports, global shifts in culture, emerging fashion, new technology, home furnishings, etc. No theme is off-limits when exploring possible trends. Since its inception, Pantone’s Color of the Year has widely impacted product design, packaging, and purchasing decisions across numerous industries. The selected color then often makes its way into every day by way of interiors and fashion.

This year’s selection of Very Peri represents transition with “carefree confidence and a daring curiosity”. With our rapidly changing world, the hue evokes feelings of expansion, opportunity, the metaverse, and new realities of modern life. More so than in previous years, Pantone explored the idea of bringing color inspired by the digital world into the physical world.

Technical analysis aside, Very Peri is bright and cheery with a rich depth. Its undertones of blue keep it classic and inviting making it a perfect shade to work into the home. Explore some of The Glam Pad’s favorite Very Peri inspired spaces below.
