Clary Bosbyshell Welsh’s 7 Tips For Festive Holiday Decorating

5

The countdown to Christmas may be on, but that doesn’t mean we’re not still futzing with our decorations! In fact, it’s one of our favorite things to do this time of year – an extra sprig of holly here, a bow on a wreath there: bow on the top, or bow on the bottom? That’s the great holiday debate of 2020 (at least over at the King household)! If you are in search of a little enthusiasm to put the final trimmings on that tree (if you’re just getting started, that’s ok, too!), Atlanta-based interior designer Clary Bosbyshell Welch has just the inspirational oomph that we all need to fuel our festive frenzy!

Clary is a familiar face and friend here at The Glam Pad, and her light, bright, timeless interiors make the perfect backdrop for a dusting of Christmas magic. We love her yuletide style, and we are so pleased to welcome Clary back to share her seven tips for holiday decorating!

Clary Bosbyshell Welsh‘s Tips for Holiday Style

1. Fresh greenery. Fresh Garland can be a little messy but even when using fake, add fresh berries or boxwood to give it a little more OOMPH.

2. Classic Christmas Colors. Red and Green is always Classic, I do love to add a little blue as I love the way it looks with Red.

3. Meaningful Ornaments. I love a tree that isn’t too “ styled” and has meaningful ornaments that have been collected over the years. I have ornaments that my parents gave me when I was young, ornaments from friends from our annual ornament exchange and ornaments for special places we have traveled. When decorating the tree I love remembering where each ornament came from. It makes it so special!

4. MORE IS MORE. Layer the tree! Lights, ornaments, something that SPARKLES whether that be tinsel or a sparkly garland that goes around the Tree. This year I added blue bows to make tree to give it another special layer.

5. Add touches all over the house, whether it is tying a little red ribbon around a myrtle tree or fresh satsumas in a bowl on your counter top. Little touches everywhere evoke the Christmas spirit and we need that this year more than EVER!

6. Set a beautiful table!  I love using family heirlooms and thinking of new and creative ways to set a beautiful tablescape. Most of us will be at home this year on Christmas and it is fun setting a beautiful table.

7. Give back. Most importantly this year more than ever we need to give to those in need, whether that is decorating a tree for someone that in need, adopting a family to give presents, or delivering Christmas dinner!

10 Tips for Holiday Traditions by Ragan Cain

0

There are certain people you meet online that you are instantly drawn to like a long lost friend. Ragan Cain of Mountain Brook, Alabama is one of them. You may remember Breeze Hill Farm, Ragan’s beautiful home decorated by the celebrated Mark D. Sikes, and featured in the March-April 2019 issue of Veranda. The cheerful and gracious home is bursting with color, traditional southern charm, and whimsical flair…. Just like Ragan herself!  I have been following Ragan on Instagram and was instantly hooked when I discovered her blog…  The Frances Flair is named for her grandmother and namesake, Frances Ragan, who not only taught her about the importance of tradition but also how to boldly make her own way.

Ragan has had an appreciation for classic southern style from a young age. Growing up in Eufaula, Alabama, she spent much time learning about the importance of family traditions, growing a love of antiques and travel, and enjoying time spent around the table at her grandparent’s historic home. Ragan always knew what she liked, but has often felt she was born in the wrong generation. In college when Ragan found herself thumbing through Southern Living while her friends bonded over the pages of Glamour and Seventeen, she knew her interests were more specific. Now, her grandmother Frances’ love for beautiful things and strong sense of place also live on in Ragan through The Frances Flair.

Today we are delighted to welcome Ragan Cain to The Glam Pad as she shares 10 tips for holiday decorating, making the most of Christmas 2020, and how to nurture family traditions. We will also take a tour of her elegant 1920s Eufaula home, a favorite destination for Ragan and her husband Brad.  Welcome Ragan!

 1.  Traditions ARE important, and while this year may have threatened the ability to enjoy those traditions, don’t give up hope! Instead, push yourself to enjoy those traditions, even if they have to be modified slightly for this holiday season. So if you always put up a tree each year for your annual family holiday party, still put the tree up, no matter your hosting plans.

2.  It is A-OK to do the same thing each and every year. For me, I have spent 43 Christmases at the same dining room table, with the same menu and many of the same people. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit! So if you like to keep things the same then keep them that way! And enjoy it each and every year along the way!

3.  Enjoy each holiday season! I never decorate before Thanksgiving because I like each holiday to stand on its own. Personal preference, of course! Then, as soon as Thanksgiving is over, it is game on for Christmas decorating. But, then it must all sadly come down by New Years Day!

4.  Collecting is one of my favorite hobbies, and over the years, I have turned this hobby into a holiday decorating tip. When looking at your mantle or tablescape, pull something unique into the mix that has a story to it. For example, I most recently used a vintage swan as my centerpiece for a holiday shoot.

5.  I have a tendency to impulse buy – when I see something I like, I want to buy it right then and there! So when I see a decoration or gift that I know is right, I go ahead and get it, no matter the season! I can always figure out what to do with it later, which is a much better option than regretting that I didn’t snag it at the time.

6.  For me I am a red and green girl at Christmas (see #1 above) but I do love to throw in an occasional extra color- orange, yellow or a pretty blue for a fun twist. Even if you have a more classic or traditional vibe, try adding in that extra touch of flair to mix up your holiday decor this season.

7.  When wrapping presents, remember that presents add to your decor! Even though they sit under the tree, a beautiful package can really stand out for a fun eye catching surprise. Want to take it one step further? Try adding a fun surprise to the top of each present. These items can be small and inexpensive and found throughout the year. Usually I choose an inexpensive find like an ornament, an eraser or something totally random that you can tie on top. Have fun with it!

8.  Always dress for the occasion! I know this isn’t your typical decorating tip, but I am a big believer that every detail matters, including what you wear. So if you are hosting a small gathering this year, remember to dress for the occasion to add that final touch to your holiday decor.

9.  Consider outsourcing your weaknesses when decorating your home. For me, I struggle with creating beautiful floral arrangements and centerpieces – I just never can get it right! So I always enlist a trusted florist to add the very important touch of floral element.

10. Last but certainly not least, remember to decorate for you. At the end of the day, you are the one who sees your decor every single day, so be sure that you love what you put together. It is so important that our decor makes us smile and feel good, especially when at home!

Thank you, Ragan, for the fabulous festive tips. Such an inspiration! Now, let’s take a look at Ragan and her husband Brad’s Eufaula abode, a very special getaway in their favorite place.  Decorated by Melanie Pounds Interior Design, it was decked for the holidays and featured in the December 2017 issue of Birmingham Home & Garden. 10 Tips for Holiday Decorating by Christian Ladd

0

Throughout the month of December, The Glam Pad will be featuring holiday decorating tips from some of our favorite interior designers and tastemakers starting today with Christian Ladd. Based in Texas, Christian is a traditionalist who loves to create a juxtaposition of modern pieces with antiques and heirlooms.  Her style is crisp and classic yet unpretentious, and we are huge fans. Welcome, Christian!

Christian Ladd

-Our number one tip for decorating for the holidays remains the same as our decorating tip year around: our most special pieces are antiques and timepieces such as Herend or china passed down within our family.

-Perhaps our second most important tip is again one that we like to abide by all year long – set the table! While it may not be realistic all the time, the holidays allow for the perfect excuse to use special pieces and china that you may not use often otherwise.

-We always place live flowers and plants throughout our house. Our favorite thing to add to our dining table and breakfast table is an arrangement of paperwhites. They are quick and easy to plant and they bloom quickly. They are a classic Christmas plant in our household and are a departure from the typical Poinsettia.

-I am a big fan of silver. I have collected Wallace Silver and Reed & Barton’s Silverplate Holly Bell ornaments for years, and I like to place them almost everywhere except the tree. I usually place them in a bowl or serving piece to set out on my coffee table, and I also incorporate them into place settings. They are date marked, so I use the ornaments with my children’s birth years as their place cards.

-Incorporate color! It is perfectly acceptable to veer away from the typical red and green holiday scheme. I always set colorful blown glass ball ornaments in glass bowls throughout my home and also like to add them to garland.

-Include items from travels. My favorite pastime is traveling. As is true with all pieces in a home, Christmas decorations are so much more special if they have meaning behind them. Our tree is filled with handmade star ornaments from San Miguel and they are our very favorite part of the tree.

-Take the time to gift wrap presents. A beautifully wrapped gift is much more special than gifting something in a bag (time permitting). This isn’t always realistic, we know! It’s a tip that also creates a more streamlined look while the gifts are still living under your tree until the time of gifting…

-A wreath is not just for the front door. I like to hang preserved boxwood wreaths wherever I can – on the inside of my windows, on the backs of dining room chairs and from mirrors, just to name a few…

-Sometimes you have to DIY. Garland for example, often needs a little “sprucing”.  We like to tie ribbon to garland leading up stairwells and we have also tied small pieces of string to ornaments to attach them to garland laying atop fireplaces before. Little additional touches like those go a very long way.

-Last but certainly not least, decorate whenever you please! After all that 2020 has entailed, we found ourselves getting into the holiday spirit much sooner than we typically do and it has brought some much-needed joy!

eBay Holiday Treasures

11

If I had to name my five guiltiest pleasures, scouring eBay for unique finds is definitely at the top of the list. It’s like shopping at a million shops – including fabulous antiques – from around the world with the click of a button, all from the comfort of home! The only problem, is it can be highly addictive. 😉 Today I’m sharing five of my most recent favorite eBay searches and finds…

Sterling Silver Ornaments

Each year at Christmas, companies like Wallace and Reed & Barton release dated sterling silver crosses, bells, and snowflakes. These make a lovely holiday gifting tradition. Designer and tastemaker Clary Bosbyshell told us last week her Grandmother gives her a Wallace silver bell each year. We collect Wallace snowflakes, and I have been on a mission to fill in missed years. Another lovely gift idea would be to locate a special year to commemorate a wedding date or birth year.

Discontinued China

One of the best places to shop for discontinued china patterns, hands down, is eBay. For years I have wanted to add the classic Grenadiers by Bernardaud Limoges to my holiday collection, and for some reason, they have discontinued the pattern! So I have been stalking eBay for plates. Another favorite discontinued china pattern among the Grandmillennial set is Ruban Blue by Vista Alegre.

Antique Botanicals

Framed botanical prints are a must for any Grandmillennial home, and I recently found the best resource for them…  The owner of this eBay shop has been collecting botanicals from the 18th and 19th centuries for a research digitization project, and now she is selling her treasures! Each print comes in a sealed bag with the original description page included. I purchased 42 of the Curtis prints, which are engraved and hand-colored. They are spectacular! This seller also offers antique bird, butterfly, fern, and mushroom prints. For custom frames, I highly recommend this eBay seller.

Rugs

One of my favorite design secrets is the fabulous selection of rugs available on eBay. For our new home, I purchased three… two are brand new, and one is antique. Reputable sellers I recommend can be found here, here, and here.

Vintage Needlepoint Kits

Although I haven’t had much free time for needlepoint lately, I love scouring eBay for one-of-a-kind vintage needlepoint kits. One of my most favorite recent finds is a kit containing the exact canvas used for the iconic needlepoint pillow from the late Bunny Mellon’s groundbreaking Sotheby’s auction. I have also tracked down a few Mario Buatta canvases… Did you know the Prince of Chintz licensed his very own line of needlepoint canvases in the 1980s and 90s?! I also have a weakness for the old Imari and Chinoiserie kits. These kits are particularly useful during Covid and they are also perfect for beginners.
