An All-American Home in the Hamptons

Happy Fourth of July! Today we are back in the Hamptons touring the gorgeous home of Michael Giannelli and his husband Gregory Shano. On Friday, we toured Michael’s charming shop, East Hampton Gardens, and it just so happens that Gregory is a renowned interior designer. Located just five minutes from Michael’s shop, their home is quintessential Hamptons, All-American, and perfect for a July Fourth celebration!

Built in the 1930s, the couple renovated the cottage from top to bottom in 2012, working with Architect Martin Sosa of Arcologica Architecture and Builder Doug Cavallo.

“We wanted to keep with the style of the neighborhood which was local fishermen cottages,” said Gregory.  A new roof was added with great care not to overpower or max out the roofline, and dormers were added to the attic which provided space for the primary suite and bath. A new kitchen was installed along with new windows, shingles, and a double height sunroom and back porch. “You name it, we did it!” he said.

Let’s take a look inside!

Favorite Shops: East Hampton Gardens

6

If you are in the Hamptons this summer, you must check out the most charming home and garden shop, East Hampton Gardens, tucked away on Gingerbread Lane. East Hampton Gardens offers floral, landscaping, garden designs, and a delightful shop full of one-of-a-kind treasures curated by owner Michael Giannelli.

After 30 years as a retail fashion executive, Michael jumped at the chance to take over East Hampton Gardens when the owners decided to retire. A loyal customer with a lifelong passion for gardening, Michael bought the business and relaunched with a thorough renovation and fresh new perspective in summer 2017.  The new East Hampton Gardens still has all of the high quality flowers and plants the store has long been known for, but Michael has broadened the offerings to create an idyllic gardening and entertaining oasis in the heart of East Hampton including a new Flower Shop, professional interior design services, outdoor furniture, garden ornamentation, and an exquisite selection of entertaining, tabletop, gift, and home décor lines—with many brands exclusive to East Hampton Gardens. Longtime established clients include Martha Stewart, Ina Garten, Victoria Hagen, and Charlotte Moss.

East Hampton Gardens has become the go-to place for home and garden aficionados in the Hamptons who adore the “formally informal” sensibility Michael brings to the shop with its French and English garden-style influences. With his husband, interior designer Greg Shano, Michael has resided in the seaside community of East Hampton for more than 20 years, where their beautifully curated Hamptons home impeccably reflects a shared love of gardening and home design… Please check back on Monday, as Michael and Greg will be giving The Glam Pad a special tour of their home! You won’t want to miss!

Coastal Grandmother, Nancy Meyers, and Casa Branca

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we explore coastal chic interiors, reminisce on Nancy Meyers films, and performance fabrics. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

A Traditional Hamptons-style Home Becomes a Pop-Up Chanel Boutique

Set in the idyllic village of East Hampton, 26 Newton Lane has been transformed by Chanel into coastal heaven. From now until Labor Day the once empty shingled home brimming with lush landscaping will operate as an ephemeral boutique, a store model the fashion house has utilized in the past to bring experiential shopping to unique locations.

Chanel

The boutique is strategically situated off the iconic Main Street of East Hampton, offering a sense of discovery and intimacy for its visitors. Similar to past ephemeral boutiques, the goods held within and beautifully appointed interiors perfectly reflect the environment. Built in 1897 by Joseph Greenleaf Thorpe, the famed architect of Grey Gardens, the building is landmarked and has been meticulously maintained throughout the decades. After one drinks in the luxe archways, crisply painted trimming, and well-manicured details of the exteriors, a treat awaits on the interior.

There is no shortage of covetable pieces to obtain in the boutique spanning two full floors with the second being appointment-only. With high contrast white walls and matte black floors, the store pays tribute to the fashion house’s roots while connecting to its Hamptons surroundings. Each upholstered piece is clad in linen or tweed, making for a blend of Hamptonian and Parisian sensibilities.

If you find yourself in the Hamptons this summer, take a peek at the store.

Coastal Chic Has A Moment

Chanel seems to be on a cusp of a zeitgeist. But then again, the fashion house typically is. If your Instagram feed is anything like mine, it is hard to miss the flood of coastal interiors. In a nostalgic spin, the internet seems to be clamoring for the iconic aesthetic portrayed in Nancy Meyers’ movies, Diane Keaton’s character in Something’s Gotta Give is a particular favorite.

Chic Every Week

Originally dubbed “Coastal Grandmother” by twenty-somethings on TikTok, the term has taken hold expanding into “Coastal Granddaughter” and simply into an affinity for the all-encompassing lifestyle that is coastal interiors. There is no denying the impact of Nancy Meyers films. Each one combines a lust-worthy aesthetic with such ease of living. From the interiors to the wardrobe, the panache of classic prep, soothing color palette, she always creates an enviable vision of life.

Now I must watch a Nancy Meyers film, and stat! Or perhaps enjoy a long walk with a linen button-down and a woven hat.

La Vita Giardino

In the coastal spirit, Casa Branca has debuted its latest performance fabric collection, La Vita Giardino. Drawing from Alessandra Branca’s Italian upbringing, the collection marries the luxury of indoor fabrics with her Roman sensibility of outdoor living.

Floral Paradise, Pink Velvet, and The Society Set

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we are in floral paradise, pink velvet heaven and are ogling the society set. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Pamala Munson x Schumacher

June 21st marked the official first day of the Summer season. I seem to find myself in the same conundrum each year when the weather warms up and I am ready for a wardrobe change. Both adverse to heat and a New Yorker, Summer tends to be a challenging sartorial time for me. Sandals and light dresses tend to fair poorly in the streets of Manhattan.

Pamala Munson x Schumacher

With enough New York Summers under my belt, I found the simplest way to work in classic summer colors, textures, and materials is through a swap of accessories. In an exciting partnership designer Pamala Munson and textile house Schumacher have released an exclusive collection of to-die-for straw minaudières with bold floral embroidery. Each clutch pattern draws inspiration from classic Schumacher floral prints making them an impeccable addition to a summer outfit.

In the same spirit of Summer and florals, The annual Newport Flower Show made a triumphant return over the past weekend. Under the theme of “Eden…A Personal Paradise”the town’s grand Gilded Aged mansions were brimming with horticultural excellence and The Glam Pad could not help but take note. The Newport Flower Show works to raise funds for The Preservation Society of Newport County’s 88 acres of lush gardens and landscapes. Participants create cut flowers and creative garden displays ready for the public to take in.

Unlike other flower shows, The Newport Flower Show has the ornate backdrop of historic homes with unparalleled interiors. Like a perfect match, the adorned features of each room sublimely complement the sumptuous lines and inspiring colors of the flowers. It is no wonder the show draws such a crowd.

Sketch Auctions Their Iconic Pink Chairs

The iconic London restaurant Sketch has just received a facelift. Seeking to reimagine the main dining room known as “The Gallery,” the famed pink plushy seats have been replaced and sold at auction via 1st Dibs. With excitement high, only one chair remains on the lot!

Created in 2003 by Mourad Mazouz and Pierre Gagnaire, Sketch resides within the historic building of 9 Conduit Street, in Mayfair, London, and has become an institution for the who’s who of society.

Sketch London

Comprised of four dining rooms, a spaceship-inspired bar, and individual pod bathrooms, the restaurant has distinctive decor that offers dinners not only an experience of three Michelin star “New French” cuisine but a cultural experience similar to a museum. Since its opening, the restaurant has undergone numerous overhauls of the interiors. The ethos behind this is to keep the restaurant fascinating to its patrons becoming an ever-evolving entity, not simply a place to dine.

If a pink velveteen seat is in your future, hurry over to 1st Dibs! And we can certainly bask in the beauty of the newly unveiled interiors.

CeCe Barfield Thompson designs a Dream Office for Hill House Home

1

Hill House Home may be famous for their widely popular Nap Dress® (the most comfortable thing you can possibly wear in this 100ºC + Texas heat) but they actually first launched as a bedding company in 2016. After moving into her first adult apartment, founder Nell Diamond had difficulty finding beautiful linens that were also affordable. Her goal was to create a sanctuary that lifted her spirits after a long day of work and design products that would bring beauty and joy to everyday rituals. Hill House Home has since extended its collection to include home goods, accessories, baby & kids, bridal, and apparel including the beloved Nap Dress®.

Based in New York, Nell recently commissioned her longtime friend, CeCe Barfield Thompson – a favorite of The Glam Pad – to design the SoHo office. CeCe swathed the entire space with romantic prints, all-over florals, feminine frills, skirted furniture, and wall-to-wall carpet to perfectly reflect the “fairytale mood” of the brand.

Nell wanted people to be transported when walking into the SoHo office. The vibe of the entrance is an old-school ladies’ dressing room, complete with fainting couch, curtained wardrobe, and frilly dressing table.

For Nell’s private office, CeCe chose a palette of pinks, greens, and blues, rounded out by midcentury French furniture and whimsical touches like a Jean Roger ceramic frog planter. The floral trellis block print was enlarged from a Hill House Home dress motif.

The meeting room is minimalistic in style to allow Hill House Home’s various prints and products to shine on their own.

Next is the design studio, which doubles as the fabric library. It is covered in Hill House Home’s lovely Pond Floral pattern.“It was important to me that it felt as serious as a boardroom, but still has details like scalloped lamps that keep it true to us,” CeCe told AD. She also custom-designed an armoire for the space, placing a pinboard inside and lining the drawers with Hill House Home prints.

“Hill House Home isn’t a neutral brand—it is unabashedly feminine,” CeCe told AD. Yet practical, everyday living was also a priority, and she made sure everything was durable enough to withstand visits from Nell’s young children and for various team gatherings (with lots of food!) to be held in comfort… It is a perfect representation of the same easy-going spirit that embodies Hill House Home.

Monet at Christie’s, Chanel Metiers d’Art, and Totally Toile

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we explore a rare auction of Monet via Christie’s, Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collection, and Toile galore. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Each year Chanel releases a Métiers d’Art collection highlighting traditional craftsmanship and the exceptional savoir-faire of the Maisons d’art. Virginie Viard, Creative Director and successor of Karl Lagerfeld, presented a second exhibition last week at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence to celebrate the release of the new ready-to-wear collection now available in Chanel boutiques worldwide. The Métiers d’Art show takes place annually in a tribute location that showcases the intricacies of the collection, all of which could not be done without the many workshops abroad that provide the house with handmade lace, embroidery, fabrics, and much more.

The backdrop of Firenze combined with a distinctly French house made for an unrivaled dichotomy. Artistry, passion, and beauty are the best words to describe the divine site of the show. The rarefied world of Chanel always leaves me breathless.

FROM ONE ART FORM TO THE NEXT

In a rare sale set for June 28th, Christie’s will offer Monet’s Nymphéas, Temps Gris. Produced by the artist in Giverny, France in 1907, the Nymphéas, Temps Gris is one of a series of fifteen works in which Monet used a vertical format to depict the reflections of light, color, and movement within his water lily pond. During the year 1907, Monet went through a period of extreme creativity. He utilized a variety of painting techniques within the series to better capture his subject thus forging an unforgettable series.

The painting has only had two significant public showings since its creation and has otherwise been in private hands. The auction will take place in London and the painting is expected to surpass the $35,000,000 – 55,000,000 estimated value.

Totally Toile

As an interior designer, Schumacher is a constant go-to for projects. Not only are they rich with history having been founded by Frederic Schumacher in 1889, but the company remains at the helm of innovation within the industry. This past week I was lucky to attend the showroom debut of Schumacher’s latest collaboration collection entitled Cul-de-sac with fashion designer Victor Glemaud. Known for his bold knits and vibrancy, Glemaud honors his roots within the collection drawing from his Haitian background, favorite reads, artistic inspiration, and fond memories.

A favorite of mine is the Toussaint Toile. This Toile de Jouy illustrates the life of Toussaint Louverture through scenes of his valiant liberation of Haiti. Glemaud’s homage to his Caribbean heritage combined with a touch of whimsy makes this large-scale, traditional toile modern and fun. The collection as a whole has a classic appeal with a distinct edge, very reminiscent of Glemaud’s daily work.

Tour a Historic Ogden Codman Home in Kentucky!

You are in for a treat today as we have arranged a special video tour of Malvern House, built in 1914 by by famed architect Ogden Codman Jr. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Malvern House is the home of designer Lee W. Robinson, founder of the Lee W. Robinson Company, and his wife Babs.

In 1897, Ogden Codman Jr. and Edith Wharton co-wrote The Decoration of Houses which is known to this day as one of the most important decorating books ever written.  All of these principles were incorporated into the design of Malvern House. The landscaping was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture and co-designer of Central Park.

Commissioned by Babs’s great-grandparents, Codman completed his design of the house in 1914, and building was completed in 1922. The home stayed in the family until 1992 when it was sold to the former Kentucky governor’s wife. In 2007 Babs and Lee purchased the home, which had become vacant and neglected. Lee spent two years bringing the estate back to life, incorporating furniture and treasures that had been in the family for generations. Using original Olmsted blueprints, in 2011 they began to restore Malvern’s 15 acres of grounds and gardens. Once the overgrowth was cut back, long-buried brick walkways were unearthed and the skeleton of the Olmsted plan emerged and was brought back to life.

Click here to watch the video, and here to learn more about the rich history of Malvern House, including how Babs’s family was saved from an ill-fated trip aboard the Titanic in 1912!

Below are a few of our favorite images of this exquisite home…
