Horsing Around with Nick Mele

Having immortalized the glitz and glamour of America’s coastal elite in Palm Beach and Newport, Nick Mele has now turnsed his lens to an entirely different brand of luxury. Trading in stilettos for wellies, and gleaming Range Rovers that share driveways with mud-splattered pickups, he now turns his focus to the rarefied charm of country estate life.

In this whimsical 10-piece series, Mele has crafted surreal images of this beautiful world. think a horse popping in for afternoon tea in a formal parlor, geese plunging into a swimming pool under the watchful eye of their swimsuit-clad herder, and an equestrian crashing an elegant garden party mid-jump. Each photograph delights in the playful tension between grandeur and grit. These photographs are truly a beautiful and spirited reimagining of high society, where  whimsy takes center stage and tradition gets turned delightfully on its head.

“This may be the series I am most proud of to date,” shares Mele. “These ideas have been percolating in my head for quite some time – this fascinating intersection where luxury meets the land, where formality meets freedom.”—Nick Mele

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, Black Friday sales, and the Houses & Parties Holiday Shop. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse is back for its 16th year, and this time, it’s set in the iconic former home of legendary golfer Bobby Jones. Originally gifted to Jones after his U.S. Open win at just 21—and the very spot where Augusta National Golf Club was dreamed up—this 1929 Colonial gem in Buckhead has been reimagined to honor its storied history while embracing modern luxury.

Open now through December 15th, the Showhouse features the work of 18 outstanding designers who have transformed the residence into a holiday wonderland. Presented by Firelight Homes and hosted by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, this festive event supports the Atlanta History Center while showcasing Georgia’s top design talent.

Houses & Parties Holiday Shop

Houses & Parties has landed in New York with a merry takeover at Veronica Beard’s Madison Avenue boutique! Rebecca Gardner and her band of festive elves have worked their magic, transforming the storefront and windows into “A Screaming Blast,” a delightfully over-the-top holiday spectacle brimming with style, sparkle, and in typical Houses & Parties style, tongue-in-cheek treasures galore.

Photos courtesy of Adam Kuehl.

Open through December 15th, A Screaming Blast is the ultimate holiday haven, a one stop shop for heirloom silver, artisanal barware, sumptuous table linens, show-stopping party hats, indulgent confections, thoughtful hostess gifts, and a chic Paul Arnhold Glass collaboration. It’s festive shopping and revelry tied up in one glittering bow.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by velvet-wrapped walls, tinsel-laden pines, handblown ornaments, and glistening metallic tassel. And the pièce de résistance? Champagne toasts, caviar tastings, and a baby-blue 1954 convertible making periodic stops along Madison Avenue. This is one pop-up you will not want to miss. Be certain to stop in!

Home for the Holidays with Shelley Johnstone

For designer Shelley Johnstone, the holidays are a time for creating memories, and her beautiful home provides the perfect backdrop. “My five grown children come home for the holidays and they want all the traditions they remember from their childhoods. I still do the gingerbread houses, as well as the trees in the study, the solarium, and the foyer. And I set the table with treats they’re never too old to enjoy,” she said.

Shelley loves to display festive decoration throughout her Lake Forest, Illinois, home, which was designed by a student of the legendary architect David Adler. A recurring deer motif sets the tone, complementing Shelley’s yearlong decor, along with fresh garlands and jewel tones for a pop of color in the dining room. Let’s take a tour with photography by Aimee Mazzenga and styling by Cate Ragan.

Such a beautiful home! We also adore her stunning backyard, which we have featured here.

Shelley is also one of our current “Christmas with the Tastemakers”  where each year we share gift guides and home tours from some of the nation’s leading designers and tastemakers.  Click here to check out the complete Shopping Guide!

The Perfect Thanksgiving Home by Bailey Ward

When designer Bailey Ward‘s clients purchased a house in Atlanta’s beautiful Chastain Park, it lacked warmth and character. The main goal was to make it feel like home while facing the challenge of blending the husband’s contemporary minimalist taste with the wife’s layered, traditional aesthetic. The result is a charming and cozy home, perfect for starting a family and hosting intimate Thanksgiving dinners. Let’s take a look inside!

Photography by Kelly Blackmon of Emily Followill, and styling by Brittany Forsling.

The dining room was just an open space so they used fully upholstered chairs in a rich brown wool to create a more intimate dining space. The fine art photograph is sentimental to where the couple got engaged, and the wallpaper is Brunschwig & Fils Bird And Thistle.

The large breakfast area was outfitted with a fully custom banquette in a stain proof fabric in preparation for little fingers.

“We didn’t shy away from color in the family room with a beautifully upholstered sectional in Peter Dunham performance fabric,” Bailey said. “Jewel tones fill the space and give the homeowner’s that much desired character the home was lacking.”

The Office was filled with builder grade paneling which Bailey replaced with more appropriate picture molding. We the walls were the walls and built-ins (which were expanded upon for the client’s extensive library)  were coated in Farrow and Ball’s Elephant Tusk.

While the walls remain white to keep a serene feel in the client’s primary bedroom, a fully custom headboard makes a statement. We balanced the traditional elements with a playful quilt, contemporary lines in the lamps, and a woven bench.

The perfect home for Thanksgiving or any family gathering! To learn more, please visit Bailey Ward Interiors and follow @baileywardinteriors for ongoing inspiration on Instagram.

La Petite Maison, Quiet Luxury Handbags, and Vincent Darré X Monoprix

Welcome to TGP Tidbits where we round up the happenings and our musings of the design industry each week. This week we take a look at La Petite Maison, our favorite quiet luxury handbags, and Vincent Darré’s collection for Monoprix. Written by Natalie Aldridge.

La Petite Maison

La Petite Maison, Houston’s charmingly miniature showhouse is here!. Part gala, part designer showcase, this pint-sized extravaganza merges philanthropy with a serious dose of creativity. At The Glam Pad, we are huge dollhouse fans, but this takes it to a whole new level.

Crafted by local architects, builders, and designers, these dollhouses are reimagined as miniature masterpieces—tiny jewel boxes brimming with style and creativity. Each one is auctioned off to benefit Family Houston, a cause championed by founder Alexandra Killion, whose flair for blending Houston’s vibrant social scene with the design world makes this event truly one-of-a-kind.

This year’s glittering lineup includes design luminaries like Jean Liu, Avery Cox, Courtney Barton, Jennifer Barron, Lauren Wills, Amy Kummer, Elizabeth Gerrit, and Kristen Leigh Studios. Adding to the glamour are contributions from industry heavyweights such as Donald Robertson, Coley Home, The Urban Electric Co., Benjamin Moore, Thibaut, Fleur Home, Porter Teleo, Beata Heuman, Holland & Sherry, Schumacher, Pierre Frey, Pindler, and Robert Kime. Think of it as the tiny house movement, but with a couture twist!

Quiet Luxury Handbags

The rise of “quiet luxury” is a movement that resonates deeply with us here at The Glam Pad and has inspired us to reflect on our favorite understated yet luxurious handbags.

A quiet luxury handbag is more than just an accessory; it’s a cornerstone of a capsule wardrobe. Its versatility, superior craftsmanship, and ability to seamlessly complement any outfit make it an enduring staple to any wardrobe. To help navigate this, we’ve curated a list of our current favorite quiet luxury handbag brands. These labels may be steeped in heritage, but they remain refreshingly understated. Their designs often forgo flashy logos and overt embellishments, focusing instead on exquisite craftsmanship and subtle elegance—the hallmarks of true luxury.

With Black Friday just around the corner, now is the ideal moment to invest in a handbag destined to become your go-to hero piece!

Vincent Darré X Monoprix

Vincent Darré, the quintessential Parisian dandy and designer extraordinaire, known for his chameleonic career spanning fashion and interiors, needs little introduction. Renowned for his theatrical, baroque-meets-whimsical aesthetic, Darré once again takes center stage with his second collaboration with French retailer Monoprix.

Drawing inspiration from astrology and the zodiac, this collection is a blend of playfulness and intrigue, reimagining festive décor with a mystical twist. From an opulent velvet armchair to a surrealist metal floor lamp, an Art Deco-inspired coffee table to dramatic baroque candlesticks, each piece exudes enchantment—ideal for creating a Christmas steeped in magic and wonder.

On the fashion front, it’s all about party glamour. Think sequined dresses, jacquard tuxedos, silk shirts, and embroidered woolen bombers. In true Darré style, the entire collaboration is over the top and perfectly lavish.

A Classic Oklahoma Christmas with Eleven Gables

0

Recently I had the opportunity to catch up with friend Emily Dinwiddie, founder of the popular lifestyle blog Eleven Gables, when she came to Dallas for a Frontgate collaboration! I was able to convince her to give us a little peek into Christmas past at her beautiful Oklahoma City home and share some of her family’s favorite holiday traditions.

Emily is a wife, mom to four boys, gardener, decorator, and “jane-of-all-trades”. She is one of our former Holiday Tastemakers, an annual tradition here at The Glam Pad where we share the chicest gift guide of the season, compiled by 20 of the nation’s leading designers, artists, and purveyors of good taste. And she has been named Better Homes and Gardens Stylemaker six years in a row! We are thrilled to welcome Emily back today!

Emily Dinwiddie, Eleven Gables
Q:  You have such a beautiful home, can you tell us a little bit about it’s history?
A:  Our Southern Living Home was built as a spec home in 1999. We are the second owners and have done extensive remodeling to adapt the spaces to life with four active and growing boys. We are located on a little over an acre in Oklahoma City. We named our home after the number of gabled windows on our home and cabana.

Q:  Are there any themes you envision when decorating for Christmas? Traditional/classic, blue and white, etc?

A:  The theme of my Christmas decor varies throughout my home. In our family room, we have the family tree that we hang the boys’ homemade and collected ornaments on. The paper chain was made by their tiny hands over fifteen years ago. I have a special box I store it in year to year so it doesn’t get smashed. It is truly a treasure. This is the tree I reserve for traditional reds and greens.

In the formal entry, I place our 9’ tree in a chinoiserie pot (new this year-stay tuned) and decorate it with my hand painted and collected blue and white ornaments. In 2014 I began painting my own ornaments when I couldn’t find what I wanted in stores. Now, blue and white ornaments have become quite the trend!
I use white and shades of blue bows tucked within the tree branches for softness and color.

Q:  What are some of your family’s favorite holiday traditions?

A:  Christmas traditions start and end with observing Advent each Sunday for the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Advent is a time of anticipation and preparation of our hearts for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. Other traditions include decorating the family tree together, making my recipe for spicy Chex mix, baking and decorating sugar cookies, decorating a gingerbread house, and shopping for small gifts for one another.

Q:  Any tips for Christmas decorating you can share?

Fun and Festive Holiday Tablescape Tips by Lauren E. Lowe

Lauren E. Lowe, founder of Lauren Elaine Interiors in Atlanta, is back today sharing a tour of her home decked for the holidays along with her expert tips for creating a festive tablescape! Lauren is one of The Glam Pad’s 2024 Tastemakers, and we are delighted to learn her tips and tricks to masterful Christmas decor. On Monday, we toured two other examples of her holiday style, which you can revisit here. And now without further ado, let’s welcome Lauren!

Creating Festive Tablescapes, by Lauren E. Lowe

The key to any great tablescape is layers: A tablecloth (or placemats), your china placesetting (which can be as simple as one dinner plate), cutlery, glassware, and dinner napkins are your base. Then I always include some kind of floral arrangement, candlelight, and an element on each plate (I don’t like a naked plate unless I am layering several plates and a bowl on top). I prefer low florals (or little potted plants/topiaries) so that guests can see each other across the table. Silver julep cups or even small juice glasses are great. I keep the candlelight element simple: a few clear votives or taper candlesticks always provide ambiance.

Keep clippings from your fresh garlands, purchase clippings from a nursery, or even go foraging in your neighborhood for some magnolia branches or holly berry branches. You can use a few clippings in simple arrangements with red or white roses, tie a small clipping with ribbon around each napkin, or make a centerpiece by nestling clippings in a compote bowl and pile pretty glass ornaments on top. If you have any extra longer lengths of garland, you can snake it down the center of the table and nestle candles and small flower arrangements around it. This works really well with simple cedar or pine garland.

Use what you can find at the grocery store. Adding a piece of fruit to each place setting can lend some holiday color to any table scape, such as plums, fresh cranberries, clementines, pomegranates, or even granny smith apples. White or red grocery store roses make easy arrangements with greenery clippings. Candy canes, Brach’s peppermints, or holiday colored Hershey’s kisses look festive scattered in the center of the table.

I love to set a cracker at each seat. They add another layer to the table and it’s always fun to open them up together. You can also add a little name card to each cracker.

And don’t forget to include the other parts of the room. Add candles and greenery to your server, wrap some greenery around the bottom of your chandelier or hang white origami stars.

And the most important tip of all: make your floral arrangements and set the table a day ahead of time so you can enjoy the process!
